The Experience
One of the best-preserved old towns in Valencia, where the winding streets are lined with narrow houses painted in bright colours – said to be so that the local fishermen could recognise their homes while out at sea.
Three properties have been combined to create a quirky house on three levels, delightfully furnished with antiques and with a rustic Moroccan flavour. It includes three air-conditioned bedrooms and a walled terrace with a BBQ and a shaded dining area with glimpses of the sea.
The town has a long tradition of chocolate making – you can tour the Valor factory – and a fascinating museum has gold jewellery from Phoenician times, Egyptian flasks and Roman mosaics unearthed from excavations in the town. The main beach never gets too crowded, even in the high season, and you can watch the fishermen unload their catch at the quay in the late afternoon.

Location
The neighbourhood
The house is set 500 metres from the seafront with restaurants ranging from casual beach bars to top-quality places such as Casa Elordi, which is set in an old townhouse near the Central Market, and a Galician fish restaurant along the seafront, Sabor de Galicia.
Local points of interest from Jeremy Wells
- Casa Wilfredo was once a fisherman’s house. The main timber in the roof of the bedroom is quite clearly an old ships mast. The stone for the walls came from the medieval castle which used to stand on the site. The bench in the dining room is an old boat.
- If you look at the floors in the main bedroom and the Moroccan room you can see where the rooms used to be divided. The rooms were much smaller and housed many more people in those days.
- The reason there are three chocolate factories in Villajoyosa is that chocolate first arrived by sea from the New World to Villa. The best chocolate and churros are at Valor at the top of the escalator on the beach.
- As our children have been coming here for over ten years there is a large selection of beach paraphernalia : lilos, paddle boards, umbrellas, chairs, seats available for the use of visitors.
- Take a morning stroll up the cobbled streets to the bakery stopping for cafe con Leche and pan con tomato in the Church square. Later paella or fresh fish at a beachfront Restaurant washed down with a jug of sangria. Our favourites are Madrid or La Marina.
- Sleepy very Spanish hideaway, with no cars. The only sounds are the swifts returning to their nests at night and occasional singing and flamenco practice by our neighbours. In complete contrast to Benidorm twenty minutes away by taxi or tram if you must.

In the heart of Villajoyosa's superbly preserved ancient fishing town, an imaginatively converted town house a few minutes walk from a superb beach and restaurants. Within, charming, eccentrically furnished accommodation of great style and character, 3 gorgeous bedrooms, a living room from the Casbah and a sun terrace with shaded dining table. Atmosphere and style near a wonderful beach.
