The Experience

Joan and Montse have converted their 17th-century masia with considerable flair and go out of their way to ensure everyone has a memorable stay. There’s space to roam, a lovely pool, barbecues for guests to use, corners to escape to, marvellously well-equipped communal areas and oodles for children – a sweet outdoor play area; a room stacked with games and toys for the odd rainy day.

The eight apartments each have their own outside space. Bathrooms and kitchens are perfectly functional, and if you don’t fancy cooking every night it’s a short stroll to an authentic restaurant in the village, El Ganso, more are close by, or you can pre-order supper for your arrival.

You’re 20-minutes from Girona, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the tranquil Llémena Valley (part of a volcanic geopark) – steeply wooded hillsides, soaring birds, superb walks. Peace seekers, art lovers (Dalí country) and families will all love it here.

Reviews

What is outstanding and El Nus is the setting. Nestling in a secluded valley with views towards an extinct volcano now covered by a forest, the place invites relaxation. There are 8 guided walks and to unwind after the exercise, one can relax in the shade by the pool. There are a handful of authentic and traditional restaurants near by. A perfect place to unwind!

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a 10-minute walk down a small winding road to the village where you'll find shops and restaurants. For a slice of authentic Spanish life try El Ganso restaurant. You're just 17km from Girona, a haven of museums, galleries and Gothic churches with a web of cobbled streets to get lost in. Don't miss a visit to the Dalí Museum in Figueres or the best of the Costa Brava beaches (both 45 mins).

Local points of interest from Joan Pla Calsina

  • Girona city: Judio Barrio in the old town, its Cathedral, has a flower exhibition from the 11th to the 19th May when you can visit all of the interior patios of the city’s stately houses.
  • The Dali Route: the city of Figueres and the Dalí Museum, visit his studio and Salvador Dalí’s home in Cadaqués, and visit the Castle of Púbol. The Cabo de Creus natural park is on the route, too.
  • Garrotza volcanic Natural Park: an area of outstanding natural interest. Excursions to the Volcanoes of Santa Margarita which have a hermitage in the middle of the crater. Visit the medieval town of Santa Pau.
  • The Valley of Llémena. A little valley in which we are situated, where you can go out for excursions on foot or bicycle. In Llorà you can visit the Roman Church from the 9th to 12th centuries.
  • The medieval city of Besalú, and in the same area you can visit Banyoles lake.
  • We are 45 minutes from the best beaches of the Costa Brava. Begur, Caellla de Palafrugell. Visits to the medieval towns of Pals and Peratallada.

Introducing

Joan Pla Calsina

Montse worked as a civil servant in Girona and Joan worked in the family chemicals business before they set up the apartments, with their three children, in 2008. They are keen to make El Nus as sustainable as possible and plan to install solar panels and a biomass boiler to reduce their reliance on oil. As keen walkers they can help plan walks or bike rides in and around the local area.
