The Experience
Egyptian vultures soar and the escarpments rise sheer from the valleys, a thousand feet into the air, like great, green, lost worlds. The views are awe-inspiring and you are on the High Table above it all. This medieval manor has been restored by the Abey-Parris family with inspirational care and love. They dug out a huge underground car park and a vast indoor swimming pool, and then wrapped a superbly designed hotel of 17 rooms around the side of the mountain to go with them. The four little stone cottages sit alongside. All are eco-friendly and delightful with old stone, oak, tiles, wood-burners, books, sheltered terraces – and a sitting area under a mulberry tree. Though self-catered you can order breakfast and dinner which is served over in the hotel. Cool off in the pool, play the piano in the vast reception areas, head out for walks, countryside, villages – and the coast isn’t far away. The whole atmosphere here is generous, warm and ‘family’ – come for the ineffable peace.

An amazing place; the description does not exaggerate. The views are vast and spectacular, the buildings, both old and new, are beautiful, and the underground car park and swimming pool are stunning. A real Grand Design of a place run by helpful, welcoming people. As a family of four we stayed in a spacious, luxurious 'apartment' in the new building comprising a studio and double room joined by a private staircase. With seating inside and out plus a kitchenette, this was ideal for self-catering. Peace, space, views, walks, swimming, table tennis - just watch your car tyres on the bumpy track!

The most inspiring place we've ever stayed in, and trust me, I've been looking for this kind of retreat for dozens of years and in many countries. It enables you to be close to yourself and to nature. The rooms are vast and pampering, We enjoyed 21st century comfort in a place built and restored by loving and caring people. A great base for getting to know hilly Catalonia. The advice you get for trips around is one that can't be found in any guide book. Our three nights there left us haunted (in a good way) and we are already planing our return.

L'Avenc is such a special place which offers amazing cliff views and wonderful country walks right outside your doorstep. The apartments were very spacious, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Our family loved the incredible, unique indoor pool. The nearby local villages of Rupit and Tavertet were very quaint and picturesque. The locals were very friendly, the restaurants and stores were reasonable. The drive to either of these towns were breath taking and extremely scenic. I really enjoyed reading Matthew Parris's book a Castle in Spain! Belinda our host was very welcoming.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Belinda Parris, Tammy Abey & Helena Vilar
- Rupit and Tavertet , two ancient mountain villages, are both within walking distance. Alternatively you can drive to Figeures to see Dalí's museum, then Roses for an afternoon on the beach, then return to the coolness and quiet of l'Avenc to rest and sleep
- Vic and its romanesque museum and Saturday market or Olot in the midst of extinct volcanoes are both 40 minutes away by car. See the sunken village of Sau in the reservoir after a 2 hour hike down the cliffs and have an excellent lunch and swim at la Riba.
- We now have our own meal service. Organics breakfasts can be added as can delicious dinners from 8PM with 3 starters followed by a main course with wine and vegetarian options. L'Horta is also a great restaurant in Tavertet to try.
- L'Avenc was saved from ruin back in 1997 when Matthew Parris, part owner walked past the place and fell in love with it. and teamed up with his sister Belinda and brother-in-law Joaquim. Penguin's "Castle in Spain" tells this incredible story.
- This is the heart of Catalunya. You can see all topografical points from L'Avenc, symbolic of what it means to feel Catalan: spot Montserrat to the west, Canigó to the North , the beautiful Montseny range to the South and see the sun rise behind Girona.
- Bird-watching at l'Avenc is sitting outside your cottage and just watching...or are those Gryffon and Egytian vultures actually watching you instead? Wallcreepers, woodpeckers, red-beaked choughs..this is a haven for bird enthusiasts.

What a very special place to stay. The location is superb, high up in the mountains with stunning scenery and wildlife. Within minutes of arriving we were watching eagles and vultures soaring . We stayed in one of the self catering studios. They are very well set up with all you need and spotless. Absolutely perfect for us as we were on a cycling holiday and could cater for ourselves including making packups. Beautiful location for walking and cycling, albeit big climbs. Swimming pool is fab as it’s 25 metres so you can have a proper swim. Overall the experience is first class.
