The Experience

Swings and sequoias in the grounds, the odd swaying palm and weeping willow, canals, locks, vast lawns and ancient trees – over 82 different species. Views from bedrooms and the dining veranda are superb. This is a very comfortable haven between the Cabuérniga valley and the golden beaches of Comillas.

Over 100 contemporary photographs enliven the interior spaces; squeaky-clean bedrooms, two with balconies, are serene and the new garden suites are the nicest of all: high ceilings, black slate, open-plan layouts, and sliding doors to the gardens. Wake to warm Spanish omelettes, freshly baked cakes and breads, local cheeses and yogurts.

Hire bikes or a tandem from the hotel, head off for a Parque Natural (there are two nearby), laze under a posh parasol, return to a delicious light supper. Carrejo is small but you can walk into Cabezón de la Sal.

Reviews

A wonderful place to relax in, especially given the stunning garden with 82 species of trees, including redwoods and the tallest palm tree in Cantabria. It is perfectly placed to explore the nature reserve of Saja-Besaya or beaches of Comillas. Alfonso is an attentive host and all his staff helpful. Biggest surprise was the delicious breakfast, a feast of homemade goodies!

A welcome to two non-Spanish speaking overnight visitors. Interesting tree filled garden on edge of town. Straight forward modernised building with open terraces to bedrooms, well equipped. Meals limited in menu but adequate in plain dining room. Host speaks English and most helpful. Good for easy journey to Santander for ferry to Plymouth.

What a fantastic find. It’s such a beautiful hotel (not far from the Santander ferry back to UK). We sadly only stayed one night but plan to return one day. The rooms were gorgeous with garden views. We had a drink in the eve on the terrace then a delicious evening meal in the restaurant. The staff are so lovely, very attentive and helpful. You need to save room for the amazing breakfast though, the best I have ever seen or eaten. Thank you, we will be back .

Amanda, Wadebridge

A stylish hotel with a warm welcome. We enjoyed sitting out on the terrace as the sun set, looking out over the gardens, then retreating indoors to the warmth of the 'library' and games room. The breakfast was extensive with options for a cooked breakfast and a range of fruit (figs straight from the garden) cakes and baked goods.

Nickki and Paul, Northwich

Your description of this lovely hotel is very accurate! The decor is very tasteful and relaxing. The room had all the extras you would expect from a high end hotel. The staff were very helpful and the garden is a beautiful haven. The breakfasts were delicious too!

Location

The neighbourhood

Walks and cycles are from the door, straight up the valley to a mountain pass – it's got an Alpine feel. The coast is just 10 miles north and Comillas has one of Gaudí's most impressive buildings. There are several good restaurants in Cabezón de la Sal, just a 10-minute walk. The FEVE train stops here so it's perfectly possible to come without a car and get a taxi from the station.
