A two-minute stroll will carry you to the central square of this sleepy village – on Saturday, it’s filled with the sounds of traditional island music to accompany the vegetable and handicraft market. Take home a memento of macramé or a pair of Avarca sandals.

The whitewashed village is worth a wander but the real beauty is the surrounding nature – cycle or hike the majestic gorges, spying birdlife as you go. Walk the ancient path of Camí de Cavalls which runs around the whole island or hire a kayak or sailboat for water-based adventure. After a day breathing deep the town square boasts a selection of restaurants and bars – share a bottle and good conversation.
