An ancient defence tower is the centrepiece of this super-smart modern rural hotel; it blends beautifully into untamed countryside just two miles from the sea, where open farmland turns to olive and fruit orchards. Inside is a mix of stylish rustic and sophisticated modern (natural colours, stone walls, marble floors), achingly cool but without a whiff of pretension. Bedrooms and bathrooms are lavish in a minimalist way; for a treat, we’d choose the ground-floor room with the huge tented terrace. Breakfast will be a feast, on the terrace or in the glass-walled restaurant: unfurl a napkin and tuck into homemade jams, cheeses, Spanish omelettes, fresh fruits. Set off to discover the nearby Caves of Artá, or stay put: relaxation is taken seriously here. Sink into pumpkin-coloured cushions on the terrace, cosy up in the tower sitting-room, whet your whistle in a smart little bar or just lounge by the pool with its muslin-tented sunbeds – sublime! Dinner is served on the candlelit terrace amid wild roses and lavender, and you can bring back home-grown almonds and olive oil as a reminder of this utopia.
