The Experience
Circled by mountains, forests and the Zardón river, you’re in a very special spot for outdoor adventures: come to hike the hills, launch a canoe down the Sella (location for an annual international canoe competition), explore the Picos de Europa National Park or simply sit back and listen to birdsong in the lovely gardens.
The house, built from traditional Asturian stone, has been niftily renovated. Bathrooms are modern and swish, the bang up-to-date kitchen with a big communal table will be a joy to cook in while underfloor heating and a wood-burner in the living room keep you toasty whatever the weather. Books, artworks and big windows fill the house with colour and light.
Warm up in the sauna after a surfing session then fire up the barbecue as the sun melts over the hills and the stars fill the sky – dine on the terrace or covered eating area. Bedrooms are soothing and you’ll sink into bed feeling that all is right with the world.

Location
The neighbourhood
It's a short drive to El Molín de Mingo, a popular rural restaurant with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, serving traditional Asturian cuisine. In Arriondas (15 minutes), you'll find two Michelin-starred restaurants. The town is the start point for the descent of the Sella river. Cangas de Onís (20 minutes) is the gateway to the National Park – hire bikes, arrange horse riding and guided hikes here.
Local points of interest from Sheila Damodaran
- The seaside town of Ribadasella is just 20 minutes drive away, a charming place with small independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Visit the Cuevas de Tito Bustillo, an ancient cave complex with stunning examples of prehistoric art (booking required).
- The ancient town of Cangas de Onis, the gateway to the Pico de Europa Mountains and the lakes of Covadonga, is also just 20 minutes drive away. Famed for it's pretty Roman bridge and weekly Sunday Market (more than 200 years old), as well as its history.
- The renowned El Molin de Mingo restaurant is just a 25 minute walk from the house, following the Zardon River up the valley and further into the forest. The set menu here is superb, but make sure you go with an empty stomach, there's a lot to enjoy!
- The coastline of Asturias is wild and beautiful. Some of our favourite beaches within 30 mins drive include Cuevas del Mar, Torimbia, Niembru, and Vega, very popular with surfers. A bit further afield is Playa de Poo, perfect for little children.
- Close to home, there are many walks you can do directly from the house, our favourite being the hike to Labra. Prepare yourself for some steep hills and amazing views, passing through small villages and hamlets along the way.

Introducing
Sheila Damodaran
The owners live in Portugal but the house works like a well-oiled machine so you'll get on fine and be completely self-sufficient. A gardener comes twice a week to look after the extensive grounds.
Casa La Roza is an idyllic accommodation with an environment of overflowing and beautiful nature. It is very well equipped with everything you need to make each stay a success. Its large gardens, with its sauna, 'hórreo', barbecue and the adjacent river round out a very special place where you can breathe peace and be able to rest your body and soul.
