The Experience
Once shepherds drove their flocks over the Sierra Nevada’s rugged mountains, through pine forests, across ancient terraced soil, to the spring waters that colour this rural spot so green; pens were built, then a farmhouse; now, these sweet white cottages. Views are as stunning in scorching sunshine as in snow, stretching over a blanket of almonds to the national park’s soaring peaks. Walkers and bikers appreciate the rustic simplicity of the traditional Andalusian dwellings: chunky stone walls, terracotta tiles, beamed ceilings, patterned bedspreads, a slice of terrace for meals under the stars… Sweet Pepe and Patri manage the farm’s almond trees, beehives, large outdoor pool (open May-October), tennis court and play area, and offer masses of local tips and maps. Footpaths spider out from the farm, Granada is half an hour, the beach and ski slopes a little further. A scrumptious taste of Andalucian mountain life, food and people.

A wonderful fortnight spent in this perfect location in August. Our family (2 adults and 2 children aged 8 and 10) were able to enjoy Granada, the Alhambra, the mountains and the beach from Cortijo Balzain, as well as their lovely pool and relaxing environment. We ate very well in the restaurant there - traditional, local

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Gonzalo Ros
- You are just a 20-minute drive to La Alhambra – one of the most famous examples of Moorish architecture in the world. The palace and fortress is a beautiful site to visit, with gardens to explore and ornate arches to wonder through.
- Head to the Sierra Nevada National Park for the highest peaks in mainland Spain and stunning vistas. There are 25 official footpaths and marked routes to explore, plus 13 cycle routes. Spot wildlife and breathe in the mountain fresh air! A 30-minute drive.
- History & art lovers will adore a trip to the San Jeronimo monastery in central Granada. An impressive structure, known as the first monastery to be built after the Christian conquest in the 1400s. An excellent example of Spanish Baroque & Gothic.
- Mirador de San Nicolás (viewpoint) is a must-visit if you’re in the centre of Granada. It's said that in 1997 Bill Clinton called it “the most beautiful sunset in the world!” Marvel at the stunning Alhambra in the distance & the Sierra Nevada peaks behind.
- For seaside trips we are only an hour to the southern coast, known as La Costa Tropical thanks to its microclimate. Head to La Herradura for sandy shores and palms or Playa Marine del Este for pebbles and clear waters on the Punta de la Mona headland.
- Visit Albaycin, one of our favourite neighbourhoods of Granada. Cobbled streets & alleyways wind up the hillside of this historic, characterful area. Pass whitewashed houses, wander under the ancient Gate of Elvira, enjoy the city views at sunrise or set.

A lovely family holiday in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, Cortijo Balzain was beautiful .... as was the pool, the rustic accommodation, the suppers (always available on request) and of course, the sunsets. Thank you Sawdays.
