The Experience
A very friendly and relaxing place to be. Five bumpy minutes off the Evora road, the household dogs – including the sloppiest of wolf hounds – like to meet you at the gate. And the Baars thoroughly enjoy sharing their spacious Alentejo house – and grounds, and meals – with guests. Former chef Monique produces excellent breakfasts and dinners (and cakes for tea) – at one long table in their big, traditional dining room. B&B rooms off a small, book-lined sitting room have good beds, antique and painted furniture on polished floors, matching curtains and bedspreads and pristine, characterful bathrooms. One of the terraces overlooks the garden and impressive working aqueduct that runs by: 32km long, restored in 2010. The self-catering apartments, set away from the house, have private terraces, are similarly, carefully decorated: cosy sitting rooms with cane furniture, well-equipped kitchens and shower rooms. You’re welcome to stay put, feed carrots to the donkeys and talk to the pigs; Unesco Evora is fascinating and it’s less than an hour to the attractive dam area, Baragem do Alqueva, for beaches, boat and balloon rides…

Quinta do Cano is located on an operating cork plantation and the owners (who speak excellent English) were very helpful in broadening our understanding of cork (in particular and rural Portugal in general). Now opening every bottle of wine uncorks a delightful memory of Portugal. The rooms (we had a suite) were clean and comfortable and the breakfast was excellent (and filling). Evora was our favorite stop on our visit to southern Portugal and our hosts' advice helped us make the most of our time there. Good value! Highly recommended!
