Original, remarkable and unusual places to stay in Yorkshire

A slice of Wensleydale history, a renovated 1930s coal merchant’s store, a hotel in Sheffield that once hosted Picasso, a Georgian townhouse with a 21st-century makeover, or a romantic log cabin sitting pretty in 6,000 acres of woodland, river, moors and meadows. At Sawday’s, our inspectors are always on the lookout for places that ooze character as well as comfort. Here are our top picks for unusual places to stay in Yorkshire — we hope they make you as happy when you stay as they made us when we visited.

River Lodge at Egton Estate, Egton Bridge

This romantic log cabin on the Egton Estate is just a short hop from bustling Whitby but feels a million miles away. Hole up here where owls hoot you to sleep, curious otters scamper and darting kingfishers appear. You have a deck from which to admire it all and do some clear night stargazing. On chilly evenings you can light the wood burner and feel very cosy indeed.

There are also 6,000 acres of woodland, river, moors and meadows to explore. Walk five minutes to two excellent pubs and a good farm shop selling everything from wine to home baked cakes. Waiting for you are homemade bread, butter, Baytown coffee from a local roastery, eggs and honey from the estate when available and REN shampoos and soaps. Catch the train to Whitby from the local station.

“A really gorgeous place. Lovely owners. Pubs nearby are lush too and walking distance. Great beaches for dogs to run along nearby.” – Guest, Tori
