Yorkshire has a wonderful range of great places to stay, from grand country houses to old stone inns with flagstone floors and dark, cosy bars. It also has plenty of decidedly average places to stay, which is why we personally inspect and carefully choose the ones we work with.

Ever since we started in the 90s, all our hotels, self-catering places, B&Bs and pubs with rooms have been chosen for their character and individuality. We work with small-scale, independent businesses, supporting them in being who they are, not imposing our own style or rules on them.

You’ll find the best of Yorkshire’s accommodation here, not judged by stars and thread count, but by how great they made us feel when we visited. We hope you enjoy discovering them as much as we did.

About our places to stay in Yorkshire

Is there much to do in Yorkshire?

Absolutely. Yorkshire is like a country in itself, with wild moorlands, dramatic coastlines, ancient cities, and a fiercely independent spirit. You can hike in the Yorkshire Dales one day, wander medieval streets in York the next, then blow away the cobwebs on the cliffs of Robin Hood’s Bay. There are literary pilgrimages (Bronte and Ted Hughes territory), heritage railways, food festivals, wild swimming spots, and some of the UK’s best pubs. Yorkshire’s not short on things to do – it’s deciding what to skip that’s tricky.

What is the best foodie town in Yorkshire?

Malton has quietly become Yorkshire’s culinary capital. Tucked between the Howardian Hills and the North York Moors, it’s small but mighty, with a monthly food market that draws in producers from across the county. You’ll find everything from fresh seafood from the nearby coast to craft spirits and Yorkshire’s take on authentic Italian gelato. The town is dotted with delis, artisan bakeries and restaurants that champion local ingredients. It even has its own cookery school.

Where is the prettiest place in Yorkshire?

Beauty in Yorkshire comes in many forms. There’s the cinematic sweep of the Cleveland Way, hugging the coast with views over the North Sea. The winding, cobbled charm of York’s Shambles, where the buildings lean in close, full of history and character. Or the curve of Cayton Bay, where the beach stretches wide. You’ll also find villages like Hutton-le-Hole and Staithes, where stone cottages tumble down to the sea. In Yorkshire, “pretty” often comes with edge, and that’s what makes it memorable.
