About our special places to stay in Devon

Which is nicer, North or South Devon?

North Devon is wilder, with vast sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and rugged moorland. It has the surfing hotspots of Croyde and Woolacombe, as well as remote, unspoiled escapes. South Devon has a gentler charm, with rolling countryside and sheltered coves. Towns like Salcombe and Dartmouth have a nautical, upmarket feel, while the English Riviera brings a Mediterranean-style coastline. If you love epic landscapes and surf, head north. If you prefer calmer waters and coastal walks, South Devon is for you.

What is the best seaside town in Devon?

It’s hard to pick just one, as Devon’s coastline is lined with charming seaside towns, each with its own character. Salcombe is a favourite, with its sailing culture and pastel-coloured cottages. Clovelly, a steep, cobbled fishing village, feels like stepping back in time, with donkeys still used to transport goods. For a more traditional seaside feel, Sidmouth has red cliffs and pebbly shores. Meanwhile, Ilfracombe blends Victorian seaside charm with a modern art scene, thanks to Damien Hirst’s towering sculpture ‘Verity’ overlooking the harbour.

Which part of Devon has the best beaches?

Devon is spoiled for choice when it comes to beaches, but they vary greatly depending on where you go. North Devon’s coastline is famous for its vast, golden surf beaches like Woolacombe, Croyde, and Saunton Sands. In South Devon, the beaches are softer, more sheltered and perfect for swimming, with hidden gems like Blackpool Sands, a crescent of golden shingle backed by pine trees. For wild, remote beauty, Heddon’s Mouth in Exmoor is a secluded cove reached by a woodland walk.
