The Experience

You simply can’t get a better spot than this in the San Polo district – central but blissfully untouristy. You stay on the third floor of a 15th-century palazzo on the corner of the Grand Canal and the Rio di San Tomà, next door to Casa Goldoni. There’s a vaporetto stop outside the door and you can stroll to everything: museums, churches, piazzas (San Marco is 20 minutes), markets, restaurants and more.

Sweep up the wide staircase (or take the lift if you have bags) to an airy, graceful apartment with high ceilings, oak parquet underfoot, beautiful artwork and a pleasing mix of contemporary and vintage furniture – all designer pieces. Gaze out to the bell tower of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari as you sip your morning coffee; whip up meals in the slick kitchen; sleep deeply in the four-poster – there’s a smart shower room tucked between here and the kitchen with a breath-taking view over Frari’s Tower.

Stroll to Campo San Tomà for ‘cicchetti’ – Venetian tapas; restaurants, a supermarket and an excellent bakery are all close.

Reviews

A lovely return visit to this great Venice apartment. Excellent location by the Grand Canal near to San Toma. Beautiful well equipped and maintained property. Very responsive host/owner who provided clear instructions and helpful tips. Highly recommend.

Iain, London

Gorgeous and spacious apartment, with beautiful finishes and big windows. On the top floor with central a/c, it is quiet, cool and private. Excellent bed, bathroom and kitchen, too. We loved the location in a less touristy part of town but with easy access to the Vaporetto, museums, restaurants and grocery stores.

Beautiful apartment in great location. We loved the area. Great communication from owner who sent a comprehensive guide with helpful instructions and great local tips and recommendations. Highly recommend. We would love to visit again soon!

Absolutely worth the value! Apartment is very clean, beautiful, comfortable! Pleasure to stay there. Location is great, every time you open the door to exit the house, the view over the canal takes your breath away. We felt privileged to stay in such a beautifully renovated apartment in the historic building in the centre of Venice. The apartment has everything you need, and it is very silent! Comfortable bed, beautiful view above the roofs, and good taste design pieces. There is not any single bad thing I can say about this place!

Ca’Marcello de Leoni flat is just perfect to enjoy and discover Venice. Perfect location, beautiful flat, I recognized Ilaria’s taste and art as an architect. The flat is also large and very comfortable, in a quiet neighborhood with beautiful Venice’s light and views ‘entering’ into the flat. With nearby great caffé, supermarket , gondola service to cross the canal, and vaporetto. We truly enjoyed it and will be back for sure!

Meriem, Paris

I stayed in Ca' Marcello de' Leoni recently, on a week of research and inspiration and it was absolutely wonderful. The location is excellent as it is extremely central but out of the crowded areas and with all conveniences nearby. The flat is gorgeous, full of touches of the exquisite eye of the owner, views of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari out of our window and a well thought out space. Ilaria is also full excellent tips to enjoy Venice and we certainly followed many of them.

Arantza, Brighton (UK)

The perfect, calm place to dedicate time to the arts and fill up on culture.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's easy to get stuck into local life the moment you step outside – walk 7-minutes to Campo Santa Margherita for market stalls bursting with fresh local produce. Hop on a vaporetto outside the door, or take the traghetto service across the Grand Canal. Immerse yourself in art, history and culture; stroll to cafés, bars and restaurants. Arriving by train? The station is a 10 minute walk.

Local points of interest from Ilaria Di Carlo

  • Super central location! In 15-mins stroll you can reach the best of Venice: S. Maria dei Frari, The Rialto Bridge, Goldoni House, The Peggy Guggenheim Museum, The Fortuny Museum, Palazzo Grassi, San Marco's square, The Accademia Gallery and so many more!
  • The ‘Traghetto for San Marco’ is just in front of our building. A ‘collective gondola service’ that for the cost of 2€ will take you on the other side of the Grand Canal. It is a great way to have a gondola experience in Venice without paying as much
  • For excellent morning breakfasts or just to taste some amazing patisserie, the best choice in Venice is around the corner: Pasticceria Tonolo in Calle S. Pantalon 3764 (5 mins walk from the flat)!
  • Fond of fresh food markets? In the neighborhood you can either head to the historic and charming Mercato di Rialto for an historic and unique location, or, for a less touristic and more authentic choice, you can walk down in Campo Santa Margherita.
