The Experience

Beautiful vistas swoop across wooded hills, olive groves and the odd hamlet… you feel on top of the world. Paved paths lead through cherry trees, lavender, herbs, and a little veg patch you may raid, to a hammock, pergola and exquisitely positioned infinity pool with a shady open-air gym and sauna.

La Stalletta, the cottage, is cosy and charming and the new apartment La Cisterna is beautifully modern in style with whitewashed beams and a kitchenette under the stairs which has all you need for holiday cooking. Outside: masses of space. Your lovely eco-conscious hosts Salvatore and Sarah think of every last detail: lavender bags, flowers and their own olive oil; truffle and asparagus foraging tips; pizza and pasta making (and eating!).

You can have breakfast, light lunches and dinner twice a week in the dining room – rustic dishes made from fresh organic ingredients – or al fresco in the dining area over the pool with fabulous views.

Reviews

La Cuccagna is an absolute haven and we had a fabulous stay. We miss the stunning view of the Umbrian hills from the amazing infinity pool! Sarah and Salvatore were brilliant hosts and really went above and beyond, organising transport and booking amazing local restaurants for us that we would never have discovered without their advice. We were also lucky enough to sample one of Sal’s famous pizza nights. We’ll definitely be back!

Our stay at La Cuccagna, a charming Agroturismo with expansive views of the stunning Umbrian hills, was pure magic! Sarah made us feel right at home with her hospitality and tips about all things Umbria. Sal’s generosity of knowledge sharing when it came to pizza was incredible. Mentoring comes naturally to Sal, whose passion for pizza making is reflected in the quality of the pizzas he makes (the best you’ve had). We thoroughly enjoyed the pizza making experience which he spilled hours of his time into, and learned so much from his expertise. We can’t wait to be back!

We are repeat visitors to La Cuccagna and stayed most recently in April 2024. It's a beautiful stone farmhouse with an incredible view. The beds are extremely comfortable - we never sleep better than when we stay at La Cuccagna. Sarah and Sal are the most wonderful, warm, helpful and generous hosts. They helped us arrange so many activities - truffle hunts, winery visits, restaurant suggestions - and Sal's pizza night is not to be missed! If you're looking for a relaxing stay with easy access to visit wineries, Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio and more gems in Umbria, stay here!

La Cuccagna is a delighful haven in the countryside of the Umbria region. Staying at La Cuccagna allows you to immerse yourself in a place where you can spend peaceful time, and experience and learn about the area. The owners' dedication to the place and guests is evident in every detail. A true testament to passion and care.

What a superb holiday. When we arrived at La Cuccagna we were not only met by a breathtaking view but the warm and friendly welcome of the lovely hosts - Sarah & Sal. They were full of helpful advice, hints and tips to enjoy our exploring of the area - and there is plenty to see and do. Amazing little towns full of culture and fabulous food. We are an active family and we found lots of paths to run and cycle. The pool is just a delight to get into to cool off and I could day-dream for hours looking out over the Umbrian hills. And, Sal's pizza - voted by by three teens as the best in Italy!

La Cuccagna was the perfect place to relax and unwind. Salvatore's warm welcome with wine was just thr beginning of a lovely week with everything we could have asked for. We had the small apartment which was plenty big enough for me, my Mum andy 3 small children - meals cooked in our little kitchen and eaten as the sun set on our private terrace were wonderful. The pool was the best! Gorgeous places to sit around the pool, lovely gardens, yummy breakfasts and best of all the view! Simply stunning.

Sarah and Sal are wonderful hosts at this gorgeous hilltop house with amazing views. They let us bring our two dogs which was kind of them. Our suite was spotless clean and comfortable. Sitting by the pool was great with stunning views ( children from other guests loud at times) Breakfast was fine and same thing every day for two weeks. Drive to nearest restaurants which are all fantastic? Spent two weeks here and thank Sarah and Sal for there warm and welcoming hospitality 😊

This is our fourth weekly stay with Sarah, Sal and Rosa at La Cuccagna. We keep asking ourselves "shall we go back to Umbria again, or travel to Finland or some such?" But this place just keeps pulling us back - our warm hosts, the food, the pool, the terrace, the vegetable delivery chap, the people, and La Stalletta, our own little cottage with a fully equipped kitchen and terrace. We spent two days reading books in the quiet pool, overlooking the sunny hills of Umbria, drinking G+T's and eating proccutto and cheese on the terrace, and completely downloadi

La Cuccagna is a small piece of heaven on earth. We have been going there since 2009 and still are blown away by the views, local food and wine, as well as Gubbio, Spello, Assisi and all the other wonderful mediaeval towns nearby. Sarah and Salvatore are fantastic hosts and the accommodation and pool are superb. We love Sal's pizza and dinner nights and will continue our annual trip to La Cuccagna - appropriately the Italian for 'abundance' or 'land of plenty'

Heather, London

We wanted a relaxed location for a two week holiday and that is what we got - and more. La Cuccagna is perfect, and Sarah and Salvatore go out of their way to make their guests feel welcome, even before you arrive there. We flew into Perugia and were too early to check in, so Sarah had recommended a great local restaurant for lunch on the way from the airport - and the directions were perfect. The location is amazing, near the top of a hill, with views over the valley and beyond, all topped off with an infinity pool which has the same stunning views. It’s a great place to do nothing

Ewan, Birmingham

We were very lucky to have landed at La Cuccagna. The setting is unparalleled at the top of a ridge looking down into the Perugia valley. Unsurpassed sunsets, good workout in the infinity pool and hosts who could not do enough for us. Not sure how they pull it off with raising their darling daughter but they do! Best yet, Salvatore carried our heavy bags into our room.

Barbara & Chris, San Francisco

We have just spent a truly marvellous two weeks staying at La Cuccagna near Gubbio in Umbria. Salvatore and Sarah are wonderful hosts and take infinite pains to ensure the happiness and well-being of their guests. Nothing is too much trouble. The location is superb, high in the hills between Perugia and Gubbio with stunning views. The facilities are great, a happy blend of traditional and modern. The communal breakfasts were a highlight of our stay, always interesting fellow guests, full of humour and laughter. Then there are the occasional dine-in evenings, when Sal cooks super food .

Richard and Pam, Lymington

Another return visit to the wonderful La Cuccagna. This time we stayed in La Cisterna, a tranquil B&B room with it's own lounge and kitchenette. May is a fabulous time to visit Umbria for a long weekend and we were rewarded by warm weather and stunning sunsets. Sarah and Sal have always got a recommendation up their sleeves for a special outing and yet again they came up trumps. Revisiting nearby Gubbio and Spello was an experience I will never tire of.

Hannah, Swanmore

The self-contained cottage, La Stalletta, is a thoroughly charming place to stay and one to which we would love to return. It is spacious and well-furnished with all you need. It has a lovely outdoor area and superb views. It’s an excellent base to explore the area and the local village is a perfect place to shop. Sarah and Sal are a delightful, hospitable and generous couple. In spite of the fact they were in the midst of their wedding preparations and all that entailed, nothing was a trouble to them. They are an absolute mine of local knowledge. We can’t recommend this property too highly.

The neighbourhood

This is such a wonderful spot with views of the Umbrian and Tuscany hills – walking will be sublime. The nearest big town is Gubbio (25-minute drive), one of the most gorgeous medieval cities in Italy. Perugia and Assisi are a 30 or 40-minute drive. There are several 'agriturismi' serving good local dishes within a 20-minute drive and Lake Trasimeno, a natural paradise is a good day trip.
