The Experience

Welcome to a big, solid, meticulously restored farmhouse with beautiful vistas swooping across wooded hills, olive groves and the odd tower-topped hamlet… you feel on top of the world. Paved paths lead through cherry trees, lavender, herbs, and a little veg patch you may raid, to a hammock, pergola and infinity pool.

La Stalletta, the cottage, is cosy and charming and the new apartment La Cisterna is beautifully modern in style with whitewashed beams and a kitchenette under the stairs. Sleep in peaceful bedrooms, wake to organic homemade yogurt, fruits from the orchard, bread from the local bakery, sometimes homemade cake. You can eat light lunches and suppers twice a week in the dining area on top of the swimming pool, with marvellous views – rustic dishes made from fresh organic ingredients.

Sip Sal’s homemade limoncellos over sublime sunsets on the terrace, gaze at the distant towers of Perugia – and the stars.

Reviews

We had an amazing time at La Cuccagna. It is situated in Umbria's countryside with spectacular views from the villa. It's a great location to visit Gubbio, Perugia, Asissi and Spello. You can relax in the garden by the infinity pool which overlooks the beautiful hills and valleys. The breakfast was delicious, offering many local and fresh products from the area. Sarah & Sal are the best hosts we have ever had. They made us feel extremely welcome and had so many wonderful recommendations for things to do in the area and hosted a pasta making class for us. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

This is our fifth stay with Sarah and Sal at La Cuccagna, and each stay is equally impressive. We stay in comfortable La Staletta which is self-catering and separated from the main house, and join the others in the dining room for tasty breakfast each morning where there is always much to learn from Sarah about the surrounding Umbrian hills. We feel at home here, and can lounge, hang out with friends and enjoy the hot summer days by the pool, and the cool evenings with drinks on the terrace. If available, do partake in Sal's wood fired "pizza night". Brilliant.

La Cuccagna is a small piece of heaven on earth. We have been going there since 2009 and still are blown away by the views, local food and wine, as well as Gubbio, Spello, Assisi and all the other wonderful mediaeval towns nearby. Sarah and Salvatore are fantastic hosts and the accommodation and pool are superb. We love Sal's pizza and dinner nights and will continue our annual trip to La Cuccagna - appropriately the Italian for 'abundance' or 'land of plenty'

We wanted a relaxed location for a two week holiday and that is what we got - and more. La Cuccagna is perfect, and Sarah and Salvatore go out of their way to make their guests feel welcome, even before you arrive there. We flew into Perugia and were too early to check in, so Sarah had recommended a great local restaurant for lunch on the way from the airport - and the directions were perfect. The location is amazing, near the top of a hill, with views over the valley and beyond, all topped off with an infinity pool which has the same stunning views. It’s a great place to do nothing

Sarah and Salvatore were the most perfect hosts in every way and they are rightfully proud of what they have achieved here. We had a delightful 3 days stay enjoying the fabulous views, the most tranquil location with abundant wildlife and wonderful infinity pool. Breakfast was delicious and the bedroom spotlessly clean and comfortable and we were made to feel so at home. They provided dinner one night which was absolutely fantastic accompanied by some lovely Umbrian wines. We would highly recommend a stay here.

La Cuccagna, what a gem! a lovely Agriturismo in the most perfect hilltop position away from the madding crowd and with so much thought put into the comfort and well being of their guests. Sarah, Salvatore, Rosa and all the ‘workers’ at La Cuccagna had the common aim to make all comers welcome, happy and relaxed. Pretty garden with lavender paths and numerous butterflies and bees, lots of places to sit and sip and read or just enjoy the views. Great swimming pool. THE BEST PIZZAS wood fired in the garden. Good breakfasts. Spotless bedrooms and bathrooms. Lovely guests.

This was a real "Sawadays" experience. We stayed 4 nights, and enjoyed an extreme friendly welcome, very friendly hosts. A fantastc view, infinity pool and nice garden. Sarah and Salvatore were extreme hospitable, we never feld "customers" but we felt to be guests. Uppermost good stay, dont hesitate if you are in the neighbourhood lloking for a b&b. Also very very good tips, how and what to visit. 10/10

We loved our stay at La Cuccagna. Sarah, Sal and Rosa were so welcoming and eager to help us in any way they could. The detailed instructions of places to go and visit, the wonderful breakfasts and their company was truly a highlight. We hated to leave and were very sad to say goodbye. The view, the sunsets, and the wonderful ambience of this place live on in our memories. We hope to go back one day in the future. Thanks for a wonderful stay. Connie and Peter

We spent three nights at La Caccugna and enjoyed every moment. Sarah and Sal were most welcoming and extremely helpful. Our room was quite spacious(most comfortable bed), with small kitchen/living area and private patio. Sarah was always there to suggest an itinerary - where to go, where to park, where to eat and give us lots of fascinatining inside knowledge. We particularly enjoyed breakfast with the other guests, all sitting round the same table. The views from the house were magnificent and we wished we could have stayed longer and had more opportunity to enjoy the beautiful pool.

Rosemary, London

The welcome at La Cuccagna could not have been warmer. Even two unseasonably wet days did not dampen it. Sal and Sarah are creating a wonderful treat for those who wish to be close enough away from the tourist sights. Their local knowledge of where to go and how to make the most of your stay added almost as much to our experience as their beautifully prepared breakfasts did to my waist line! Delightful homemade yoghurt, topped off with wonderful preserves, a great delight. Not to mention the freshly baked pastries, or cheese and meats. Memorable! We'd highly recommend it for any stay

Location

The neighbourhood

There's much activity here: the making of lavender bags and their own olive oil, truffle and asparagus foraging tips, pizza and pasta making (and eating!). Gubbio is the closest town, one of the most spectacular medieval spots in Italy and with interesting festivals throughout the year. There are good 'agriturismi' serving food in the area and Sarah and Sal can point you to the best ones.

Local points of interest from Salvatore & Sarah Marano

  • There are enough medieval hilltop towns within easy reach to keep you busy for many return trips & always see something new. We have plenty of tips to keep the kids happy too. Join in with one of the many exciting festivals celebrated throughout the year.
  • Umbria boasts outstanding natural beauty and truly impressive landscapes for you to enjoy. There are some wonderful walking opportunities right from our doorstep but we also have good quality trail maps for spectacular national parks and Lake Trasimeno.
  • Immerse you senses with wine tasting, catered evenings and pasta making courses here ‘at home’ at La Cuccagna or let us arrange a tour at a fabulous organic vineyard.
  • For the adrenalin junkies among you we make arrangements for paragliding, caving and whitewater rafting (to mention just a few) with our contacts who are safe and reliable.
  • For those wanting to take home souvenirs we make recommendations with local artists, artisans and food producers that you wouldn’t find on the tourist trail.
  • We happily give our guests useful tips to get ‘off the beaten track’ and experience the very best our local area has to offer so we look forward to meeting you and sharing some of our best kept local secrets.
