The Experience
A seductive mix of calm, country elegance in a hillside villa overlooking the Spoleto valley, and gracious owners whose heirlooms decorate the former farmhouse they’ve so carefully restored. There’s a relaxed feel to the whole place, an honesty bar and plenty of space to simply ‘be’, both indoors and out.
The Tacconis organise winery tours and gourmet tastings matching Maurizio’s Sagrantino estate wines and olive oils with regional food like truffle honey, wild boar pâté and local ricotta. Come as a group for a special celebration or a photography course; inspirational cookery classes are Mary’s domain.
Michael oversees fine buffet breakfasts and gladly advises on outings near and far. It’s half an hour to Spoleto and Assisi, three-quarters to Lake Trasimeno; two hours to Rome and to Florence.

Over the course of ten years, we have had the wonderful pleasure of staying at Genius Loci six times, for a total of 47 nights. Our first stay was a very lucky guess on our part that we would enjoy a small inn in the Center of Umbria. We were so taken with the beauty of the property and the friendliness and helpfulness of the proprietors that we keep going back for more and more delightful stays. We now feel as though we have found our home in Italy. Everything about the Inn is perfect - cleanliness, breakfasts, tranquility, and comfort. One cannot possibly expect to find better lodging.

We have visited Genius Loci since 2014. Mary and Michael are so welcoming and make you feel at home. On stepping out of the car on arrival we feel the stresses and strains of the hectic life drift away and we look forward to days and nights of peace, quiet and comfort. The rooms are delightful and there is always a plentiful breakfast. The pool is a haven in the hot Italian summer. Lay back, read a book or take in the beautiful panorama with the gentle sounds of the countryside in the back ground.

My husband and I stayed at Genius Loci 3 times between 2015 and 2018. On our last visit we bought along our two daughters and their spouses. Each visit seemed better than the time before. We could not have asked for or expected more generous, knowledgeable and welcoming hosts as Mary and her son Michael. We explored the beautiful and historical area surrounding Genius Loci, and never got tired of just sitting on the terrace after a day of sightseeing and just enjoying the magnificent view. I give Genius Loci Country Inn my highest and most heartfelt recommendation.

Location
The neighbourhood
It’s a five-minute drive to Bevagna for shops, delicatessens and restaurants; two Romanesque churches and mosaics from the old Roman baths depicting sea creatures you wouldn’t want to bathe with. And there’s a magical medieval fair here in late June. Medieval hill-top Montefalco - ‘the balcony of Umbria’ - is ten minutes away and also has great food, and wine-tastings, and a famous Benozzo Gozzoli's fresco of St Francis

Introducing
Mary Thomas Tacconi
American-born Mary visited Italy as an Art History student in the 70s, met Umbrian Maurizio whose family have lived in nearby Foligno for generations, and never wanted to leave. Their charming son Michael lives next door, is a European History graduate with wide hospitality experience and guests’ main point of contact. Together the Tacconis have imbued Genius Loci with love for the old soul of the house, the region and the Umbrian way of life
We spent a wonderful, relaxing, and culturally enriching week at Genius Loci, a countryside B & B outside the small Italian village of Bevagna in the province of Umbria. Our hosts, Michael and Mary, were always "at the ready" to help embellish our vacation experience, including cooking classes, wine and olive oil tasting classes, and informed recommendations for dining out as well as touring the surroundings. Taking in the view from the B & B itself was highly restorative, as it looked out upon a pastoral landscape reminiscent of the middle ages. Overall, it was a welcome, refreshing respite.
