The Experience

High among the rippling hills overlooking a valley studded with woods and fields, are five cosy apartments set in a medieval hamlet. Step inside to beamed ceilings, open fireplaces and well-equipped kitchenettes. Some of the apartments have private gardens with a terraced dining space and there’s a pretty pool set in the communal gardens.

Roam the vast estate, stroll down to the lake with a picnic or seek out the impressive Chianina white cattle herd. They farm organically, producing pulses, grains, olive oil and beef, all of which are served when you order lunch or dinner. A plate of umbricelli, a type of hand-rolled fat spaghetti with a ragu from their cattle, is a simple and delicious Umbrian dish.

Nearby you’ll find good restaurants, Maca Muta in nearby Compignano is recommended, or stay put and try your hand at pasta and bread-making classes with Benedetta, or local wine tastings.

Here is a secret corner of Umbria where you can experience living in a small, medieval hamlet with pretty hanging gardens and modern day comforts. Charming Benedetta and her mother Paola are on hand to make your stay special and memorable whether it's organising a gourmet picnic by their lake on their 560 hectare farm or making pasta in the the old village bakery.

Location

The neighbourhood

The nearest shops are in Marsciano (8km). Here you’ll find a good restaurant, Be Happy. The closest restaurant is Oasi Villaggio, 4.5km. Visit the little jewel-like theatre, Teatro della Concordia, at Monte Castello di Vibio (21km) supposedly the smallest theatre in the world.

Local points of interest from Guido Alberti

  • Sights in San Venanzo include the large Tower that rises above the rest of the town, the remains of the medieval castle, the Church of the Madonna Liberatrice and Villa Faina,
  • One particularly interesting natural location is Sette Frati Park, near the top of Mt. Peglia: the park area includes a protected animal reserve and the Mt. Peglia Environmental Documentation Center.
  • 265,000 years ago one of 3 ‘bonsai' volcanoes was active in this area. These volcanoes were identified in recent studies, which have made it possible to develop the educational-environmental branch of tourism with the opening of the Volcano Museum and Park.
  • Nearby, the area is dotted with a myriad of medieval towers and castles in the outlying hamlets of Rotecastello, San Vito in Monte, Pornello, Ripalvella, Poggio Aquilone, Civitella dei Conti, and Collelungo.
  • Other places of interest are the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Luce, and Ospedaletto, an area popular with tourists for its pine woods.

Introducing

Guido Alberti

Guido, Paola and daughter Benedetta run the farm and holiday lets. The estate had been in the family since the 1930s before Guido studied agriculture and began farming and Paola decided to turn some of the village houses into apartments. They farm 560 hectares - all organic since 1998 - plus are bringing back ancient grain varieties and a small Chianina cattle herd.
