The Experience

Close to the cosmopolitan city of Perugia is a tiny hamlet lost in time – once home to 250 people, the population now stands at eight – with a handsome 1200s castle surrounded by rippling countryside. The feel is easy-going with five apartments taken separately or together if you’re a big group celebrating a special occasion.

Owners Vera and Julio live upstairs and offer fresh cakes, homemade jams, local bread and meats for breakfast in the bright and breezy dining space overlooking the pretty gardens. All but one of the apartments have a kitchenette for rustling up simple meals otherwise it’ll be fun to nip into Assisi or Perugia (both under 30 minutes) for supper.

Spend your days stretching out by the pool, wandering through the olive trees (join the autumn harvest if you like), taking the circular walk from the door along shaded woodland paths and strolling to the village bar.

Reviews

A quiet Umbrian oasis on the edge of a hamlet with soft, verdant views. Conveniently placed between Assisi and Perugia, this is a perfect place to stay for large groups of family and friends.

Location

The neighbourhood

Voglia di Pizza in Pianello (1.3km) at the bottom of the hill is fine for a simple supper if you don't want to drive. There are shops and a supermarket here too. Try Tre Archi restaurant or Taverna dell'Orso (both 8km) for something a bit fancier. Soak up culture, museums and galleries, eat well in Perugia then return to walk part of the Franciscan Way beside the Chiascio river.

Local points of interest from Vera Jimenez

  • Castel 13th Century, where Pope Pio II stayed in 1461 while traveling in the region dominated by St. Francis’ Assisi, which is 15 minutes away. Assisi's magic lies in its time capsule feel. Narrow, flower-lined streets wind past ancient houses, whispering tales of a bygone era.
  • Surrounded by the countryside, with traces of civilization just a view on the valley below, but in case it is needed, the supermarket is 1km on foot or a 3-minute drive.
  • 30.000 Sam of woods with paths, a small creek, where deers can be found in the early morning, together with birds from all the species in the region.
  • Measured and tested two 10.000 steps journeys, with breathtaking landscapes, departing from our property and following the St. Francis paths. Many more can be done.
  • Assisi and Calendamaggio: Visit Spello and its Flower Festivals in May and June. Festivals of Due Mondi in Spoleto (June and July) , Umbria Jazz in Perugia (July) and Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio every May 15th.
  • Perugia - 17 minutes away - transports you to a bygone era. Cobbled streets weave through honey-colored buildings, their worn steps echoing with whispers of the past. Every corner unveils a hidden piazza or secret garden, a testament to Perugia's enduring medieval magic.

Introducing

Vera Jimenez

Vera from Costa Rica and Julio from Uruguay lived all over the world before moving here in 2022 and buying the castle. They have updated the bathrooms and landscaped the gardens and they have plans to develop a truffle wood and build a yoga/multi-function area below the castle walls hidden amongst the greenery. They have two grown up children and will always be around to meet and greet guests.
