The Experience

Ignore the slightly disconcerting approach (from a side street, past a cemetery), you’ll forget all about it once you step inside the oasis of this 16th-century farmhouse. Ticking all the Tuscan boxes – rustic flagstone floors, terracotta tiles, dappled sunlight on colour-washed walls – the villa is surrounded by mature gardens with plenty of shady spots around the pool.

Bedrooms with antique touches and swagged four-poster beds are named for local artists, and en suite bathrooms have toiletries made using organic vinacce (leftover grape skins) from the family’s winemaking business.

It’s Italy, so it’s family. Taking care of everything is Alberto, the owners’ son and a trained chef. Breakfast is homemade and organic – pastries, Pienza yogurt, granola, biscotti and fresh juices – and Alberto prepares traditional Tuscan menus (handmade pici and local game) in the evening, served al fresco under a pergola draped in wisteria.

Reviews

Here you will find understated Tuscan elegance in spades. Bedrooms are a delight with romantically curtained four-posters and sunlight filters through onto soft, earthy colour-washed walls. Experience Alberto's culinary skills at breakfast and dinner, the latter accompanied by the family's high-quality wines. A cocoon of comfort and pleasure.

Location

The neighbourhood

La Bottega Matta in Sant'Albino (650m) serves artisan beers and simple dishes (try the tiramisu made with beer). Montepulciano (3km) is one of Tuscany's most beautiful towns – visit the Piazza Grande and Church of San Biagio. Walk to the Capuchin Monastery (600m), soak in Chianciano Terme's thermal springs (5.5km), hire a Vespa or an e-bike, take a cooking class, or ride a hot air balloon.

Introducing

Silvia & Alberto

This is a family affair. Alberto's grandfather rescued the property after decades of neglect and his parents renovated it before recently handing over the reins to Alberto. His dad makes fine wines (including Vino Nobile di Montepulciano), while mama Silvia oversees the whole family business. Alberto's full of enthusiasm and the most charming host, eager to make your stay a memorable one.
