The Experience
Casanuova was once a monastery, then an orphanage… now the Besançons work hard on the production of their organic wine and olive oil here, along with cookery and yoga classes. They are a hospitable family: fresh menus are chalked up on the board each day; meals, served at large tables are happy events, open to the public.
Just a short stroll from the house are two apartments for self-caterers, one up, one down. But we recommend the B&B rooms, spotless and charming, furnished with natural fabrics (no TVs) and with a serenely monastic air; bathrooms are equally delightful. Wake to stupendous breakfasts: Tuscan bread, homemade cakes and jams, fresh fruit, cheeses and cured meats, all served under the vine-tipped pergola on sunny days.
Wander the delightful garden with its green corners, inviting terraces and a secret herb garden; have a dip in the natural, self-cleansing bio pond with lily pads, surrounded by decking. It’s very restful.

We expected it would be a nice hotel in the hills of Chianti and our expectations were exceeded. It is a beautiful location, quiet and pastoral (although our GPS got confused getting us there). The staff was pleasant and helpful. Given the relatively remote location it made sense to have meals there and we were impressed by the delicious food. Since the weather was perfect, eating outdoors was particularly enjoyable. We wish we could have stayed a week. A drive through the forest to Greve in Chianti on market day was particularly pleasant.

Location
The neighbourhood
It's quiet here and views reach wide across to the mountains of Pratomagno. Figline is a 10-minute drive downhill, a small town with shops and a grocery. Greve is about 25 minutes west through the forested hills and it's the heart of the Chianti wine-producing region. The whole area teems with winemakers and olive oil producers, so plenty of tours and tastings but it's lovely to walk or cycle too.
Local points of interest from Besançon Family
- A Huge and bright hall with wooden floor, overlooking the countryside for seminars, meetings & events. Especially for groups with well furnished equipment. Ideal for Tuscan Wedding.
- Cooking classes of traditional tuscan food.
- Interesting paths in the tuscan hills for trekking
- Scheduled time weekly for massages.
- Different Winetasting organic experiences, with visit of our wine cellar and walking beteween vineyards.
- A Bio Lake as a natural relaxing area.

Introducing
Besançon Family
Charming Ursula, from Germany, and her Dutch husband Thierry bought the property in the 70s when it was in a bad state. They've gradually restored it and added bathrooms without ruining its old charm. Ursula is very hands-on and will welcome you warmly, as will her kind and smiling assistant Barbara. Both are approachable and generous.
Casanuova is a haven of calm and tranquillity, whilst wonderfully accessible, either via Chianti or straight down from Florence. Thierry and Ulla went out of their way to make me feel cherished as a solo traveller, especially at dinner when nationalities and stories mingled with ease. Giulia, Barbara and their talented team created the most delicious meals from the organic bounty all about them: the aroma before suppertime was tantalising from my room above. Here the "Bellezza della Semplicità" translates into a deeply thoughtful, tasteful emphasis on what really matters. Thank you all.
