The Experience

In the heart of the Tuscan Conca d’Oro (Golden Valley), tucked between Florence and Siena, this ancient agriturismo encircled by vineyards and olive groves has five gorgeous apartments, carved out of the original stone building. They radiate out from a sunny courtyard garden with a huge, inviting pool. Two have private terraces. Inside they are charmingly rustic with high ceilings and view-filled windows.

Beds are dressed in fine linens, bathrooms are spotless, talented Franco handcrafted the sleek kitchens, but breakfast can be delivered to your door with a bit of notice. Make sure you book in for supper – Valentino the chef, who has worked here for over 20 years, cooks traditional recipes from what is in season, fresh and delicious.

Spend days dozing with a book by the big pool, enjoy lovely views up the valley with a soundtrack of birdsong or pull on your walking boots and head out into the hills for bracing walks.

Reviews

It was great to find an old farmhouse dating from the 1700s which has, kept almost all its original features. The interiors have the original, rough, small stone walls and haven't been plastered over or painted. Monia's philosophy of genuine, old Tuscan hospitality is evident. Valentino the chef is very round and jolly and definitely adds to the homely atmosphere of the kitchen.

Absolutely lovely place. Photographs cannot do it justice. We were there with five small children, in low season so the pool was not open, but that was not a problem as it is a beautiful place with peace and lots of room to run about. The little town is very close, with the old church minutes away, a couple of ice-cream options and a world-famous butcher, plus restaurants. We had no car but it would be helpful if you wanted to explore further. Monia was a really exceptional help, including sourcing a superb driver to and from Florence airport, Food was wonderful and very plentiful.

Palagio di Panzano is a truly wonderful place to stay. Monia and Irene could not have been more welcoming and nothing was ever too much trouble. The location is perfect, being equidistant between Siena and Florence and in the heart of Chianti, with the gorgeous town of Panzano only 5 minutes away. The views are incredible and genuinely breathtaking. We stayed with my in-laws and our two children (6 and 2) and we all had a wonderful time - I can’t recommend highly enough.

Nathalie, Exetef

We enjoyed a one-week stay to celebrate 50th birthdays and our 21st wedding anniversary! Il Palagio and the nearby town of Panzano were better than we could have imagined. It is rare when online photos don’t do justice to the in-person experience. The grounds and villa of il Palagio are absolutely beautiful and rustic while still including little elegant touches everywhere. We stayed in il Torre, the largest apartment and LOVED the private balcony. The pool and grounds are divine. Service is excellent.

Il Palagio is the most beautiful place we've ever stayed in: not just the glorious views of rolling hills dotted with vineyards but the apartments themselves are spacious and luxuriously appointed. The service is fantastic with regular cleaning by discreet and thoughtful staff, a brilliant chef on site from whom you can preorder delicious lunches and dinners to eat on your terrace. We all felt so well looked after. And it's a short stroll to some great restaurants in Panzano

Location

The neighbourhood

Panzano is small but bustling and has everything you need – shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, bars etc. Also some good restaurants but there are others in the neighbouring towns like Greve, Siena (35km) and Castellina. There are ancient churches, old monasteries and summer music festivals in many of the towns – Monia and Irene can advise about these. From Siena you can catch trains.
