The Experience

Being one of only 15 guests on a legendary wine estate feels very special indeed. This is quintessential Tuscan wine country, with views of perfectly lined vineyards on the surrounding hills and the highlights of the region close by – Florence is only 12km away.

A 14th-century home has been converted into an agri-resort with two elegant sitting rooms and a billiards room. Hearty breakfasts include local fruit, cheeses, ham, bread and three different types of cakes and tarts, plus a la carte items at no extra cost (eggs, pancakes, omelettes), served on the small front terrace or next to the fire in the frescoed dining room.

Spend the day touring Chianti; return to stroll the landscaped gardens or marvel at the panoramic views from the infinity pool. Stay in for dinner at the estate’s excellent locanda, taste wine or sign up for a cookery class; you can witness the wine harvest in autumn or search the woods for truffles.

Location

The neighbourhood

The closest village in walking distance is Quarate (it's about a 10-minute walk), where you will find a few basic shops and a bar. Grassina or San Polo (both 4.5km) are your best bets for restaurants and other shopping; the Trattoria Sotto l'Arco in San Polo provides a shuttle service for guests. Further away (20km) but worth it is Il Salotto del Frantoio, a top-rated gourmet restaurant.

Local points of interest from Greta Fantechi

  • A variety of tastings are available. Guests are accompanied around the vineyards and through the cellars on a special tour that ends with a tasting of Ruffino wines, our extra virgin olive oil and a curated selection of local specialities.
  • A selection of Tuscany’s finest specialty foods can be purchased at the Bottega, Ruffino’s grocery store. Cheeses, cured meats, fruit preserves and vegetable chutneys, honey, prized truffles, and savory and sweet cookies arrive from the surrounding hills.
  • More than anything else, the Bottega is a treasure trove of Ruffino wines. Here you will find older vintages and all the labels that have shaped Italy’s winemaking history. Elegant gift boxes are a unique opportunity to give stylish and tasteful gifts.
  • Locanda Le Tre Rane is on the first floor above the wine cellar and next to the Agriresort. Eight seasonal tasting menus will rotate year-round to celebrate traditional Tuscan ingredients. A varied à la carte menu features meat, fish and vegetarian dishes.
  • Special poolside events are organized during the summer by prior reservation. The breathtaking vineyard views entice us away from our daily lives to spend relaxing moments with poolside drinks and BBQs organized by the Locanda Le Tre Rane restaurant.
  • Throughout the summer, the “Sotto le Stelle” cultural event series is held at Poggio Casciano, including tastings, poetry nights, cinema and music to savor the magic of being together. See the full events program at www.ruffino.it.

Introducing

Greta Fantechi

Ruffino wines are a household name both in Italy and abroad, and famous for their classic Chianti wine in a bottle wrapped with straw, the "fiasco". The current owners reside in a villa adjacent the B&B but are not directly involved with guests. You’ll be taken good care of by managers Greta and Francesco, both native Florentines who are a wealth of information on the local area.
