The Experience

A classic, square Tuscan villa wrapped in well-tended grounds with Cortona spread out on the hillside above. It has been totally renovated with the comfort, fun and ease of holidaymakers in mind. Australian Shan’s design eye has created an airy, terracotta tiled, open-plan living area with a friendly feel, a grand 19th-century fireplace – a find from Arezzo antique market – a half-grand piano, a breakfast room leading to a shaded terrace and a proper cooks’ kitchen (though you can also take away excellent dishes from a nearby family shop). Up broad stairs to an east facing sun terrace off the central hall and five lovely, pastel coloured bedrooms. The corner doubles draw light from two windows, the central one has a sweet, geranium-filled balcony; all have shutters, fine linen and good-looking furniture. There’s a great pool and an exceptional pool-house-with-everything. Charming, multilingual near neighbour and housekeeper Cornelia will show you around, advise, and can name every tree. And there are hammocks, a help-yourself veg garden, a basement cinema…

Reviews

Villa San Marco is absolutely lovely - beautifully proportioned, peaceful and well equipped. Our week there provided the perfect blend of relaxation and 'getting out and about'. There's lots to see and do in the local area, albeit the villa's pool area has a magnetic draw for those inclined to chill out! We were grateful for the comprehensive assistance and advice provided by the owner and also by Cornelia was was on hand to help as required. All in all, we had a great time and look forward to returning some time soon.

We are a three generation family who spent 10 days in the villa. The combination of elegance and comfort make this villa very special. We had a wonderful time and the management is excellent. I highly recommend this villa for families or couples who are looking for a romantic vacation in a superb location.

We had a wonderful time in your villa! It ticked every box and worked perfectly for all of the family (3 generations). We enjoyed it so much we struggled to go on some of our previously planned day trips! We all left feeling extremely happy and relaxed. Thank you for all of your care and attention throughout the booking process. All very much appreciated.

We had everything we needed and much, much more- most evenings we stayed home, drinking Tuscan wine by the pool and eating homemade pizzas (from the outdoor pizza oven). I stayed at the Villa with a group of 12 friends and it accommodated us perfectly. The Villa provided a lovely relaxing setting- a brilliant place to read by the pool and soak up some sun. The pool was the perfect size and depth for epic volleyball matches! We played a few rounds of croquet, badminton over the pool and tennis on the local well kept clay courts I would definitely recommend a stay here and cannot wait to return

Local points of interest from Andrew Ball

  • With a brand new pool and a wonderful poolhouse, the tranquil Villa San Marco is set in 4 acres of parklike grounds, surrounded by fields, yet it has stunning views down the valley to Lake Trasimeno and also up the hill to the magical city of Cortona.
  • You’re in a culinary paradise- 10 min stroll from 2 restaurants at a local spa; a 10 min drive to 30+ restaurants; you can source the finest local ingredients and cook up a feast either indoors or outside or perfect your skills using the enormous wood oven
  • Go cooking with Alessandra or chef Ryan, tour towns or Etruscan tombs with Carol, visit fine pottery factories in Deruta, go island hopping on the lake…. or just relax around the pool or in a hammock. Nothing to read? There are 200+ books in the study.
  • If you can drag yourself away from the pool, Cortona is only 5 minutes and Sienna, Assissi, Montepulciano, Perugia, Arezzo, Pienza, and scores of hill-top villages are all within an hour's drive. Florence and Rome are easily accessible on nearby rail.
  • Browse around the local markets, 100+ stalls (food & new clothes, no rubbish) in Camucia (2Km) every Thursday and Cortona (2Km) Saturday. Or visit Europe’s biggest antique market in Arezzo monthly. If you prefer supermarkets, there are 5 within 10minutes.
  • Italy may be famed for its dodgy plumbing and electrics, but San Marco’s significantly exceed UK standards. The OCD owner also takes against mosquitoes- there are 3 discreet but industrial machines to lure and trap them.
