The Experience

A rambling old stone farmhouse dating back to the 1700s with endearingly higgeldy stone/brickwork. There’s plenty of space to spread out and lots to do on a rainy day with a piano and guitar to play, games, jigsaws, cookery books and children’s books. On the first floor there is a ‘library’ – another comfy area if you want to escape others.

A garden wraps around the house so you can catch the sun all day: large areas of grass are grand for games (badminton, petanque or croquet) but there are also shady, quiet places to sit and look at the uninterrupted views over wooded hills and valleys. Cook in the kitchen with its smart Carrara marble tops and plenty of workspace (you’ll also find wine and beer), eat outdoors under the shade of the pergola. There’s a brick pizza oven and a barbecue too.

The pool is big enough for laps and there’s no traffic sound, just the wind in the trees and the smell of hot, resinous pines.

Reviews

La Ceruglia is wonderfully comfortable with everything well maintained. Yet it retains a homely feel of a well loved family home. The views are stunning, the pool immense, the local pottery a joy to serve food in, the damsons and figs are delicious and there is shade in all the right places. During the hot weather we needed extra fans and these were immediately provided. If you enjoy painting do not expect to leave. It is paradise. Every member of our family from the one year old upwards loved it. We shall be back.

Peter, Bath

So definitely special - a large, comfortable and relaxed place to unwind, a much-loved family home on a quiet hillside with soaring views, yet within very easy reach of the picturesque hilltop town of Anghiari.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're down a track on a gently sloping hillside. The town of Anghiari is an easy 20-minute walk and has everything you need to stock up including the exquisite Busatti linens. A 1.5km drive will take you to hearty Tuscan farmhouse cooking - the Locanda at Castello di Sorci. Sansepolcro is 10kms and Arezzo half an hour for a huge antique market on the first weekend of every month.

Local points of interest from Lucy Studholme

  • La Ceruglia is at the heart of Piero della Francesca country - Arezzo, Sansepolcro, Monterchi. Day trips to Florence (train from Arezzo), Sienna, San Gimignano, Montepulchiano, Urbino, Gubbio, Perugia and Assisi are within comfortable reach.
  • Arriving by plane to Pisa, Rome or Florence, you can catch a train to Arezzo from Florence, then a bus to the top of the lane - very easy for young people to come & go under their own steam. Perugia is 50 minutes by car - Bologna 2 hours.
  • Anghiari is a Citta Slow and one of many nearby beautiful hill top towns. There are many festivals in the area throughout the year, including the procession and crossbow competition between Gubbio & Sansepolcro every first Saturday in September.
  • Sun surrounds La Ceruglia from dawn to dusk. Spring brings a burst of green, nightingales & fireflies. Summer is hot & glorious. Misty mornings herald earthy Autumn days, mushrooms and truffles. Snowy winter nights by the open fire are a joy.
  • There are many lovely restaurants in the surrounding towns and hills. The people are warm and friendly. Tuscans are rightly proud of their regional food and wine. (There is a good wine merchant in Sansepolcro.)
  • The two houses work very well for two/three families - the cappano just right for teenagers! There is plenty of space to be together or apart - for cooking, reading, music-making, nocturnal swimming with underwater lighting, and simply stopping and being.

Introducing

Lucy Studholme

Lucy and Harry bought this lovely house as a ruin many years ago while they were on honeymoon. Over the years it has become their home in Italy but otherwise they live in Devon. You will be contacted by Matteo Boncompagnie before your stay, and who will meet you and show you where everything is. Matteo lives in Anghiari and speaks excellent English. He can advise on local sights and book restaurants.
