The Experience

Intrepid travellers will delight in this volcanic Sicilian island, mid-way between Trapani and Tunisia, you can even spot Africa on a clear day. Pantelleria is not a destination for beach lovers but if rock diving and wild rugged beauty is your bag then you’re in the right place. Elia, your delightful hostess, settles you into your ‘dammuso’ – a 400-year-old lava rock house! There are ten dammusi houses, scattered over seven-acres, blending irresistibly into a background filled with cactus, aloe, bougainvillea, citrus and olive trees. Some dwellings are set in the pines, some closer to the coast, they all radiate out from a central flower-filled garden with a pool and shady eating area. Inside they have a charming rustic-chic style: low seating areas made comfy with colourful cushions and throws, cool and inviting bedrooms, traditional bathrooms. Each has a corner kitchen for rustling up simple dishes, a bamboo shaded terrace, most have air con and WiFi… although checking your emails will be the last thing on your mind. Hike Montagne, explore ancient ruins and tombs, jump in the thermal lake. Very special.
