The Experience
Steep yourself in history at this 15th-century ‘borgo’, where weary travellers might once have stopped to rest their horses for the night. Today, eight romantic rooms, each with its own terrace or patio, are spacious and cool, thanks to the high ceilings and thick stone walls. With olive groves and uninterrupted views in every direction, the property feels remote and secluded.
This is Italy so you come to eat. Take a cooking class to learn the secrets of Sicilian cuisine or sit back and let Mara’s team work their culinary magic for you. Breakfasts are a feast of regional cheeses and cold cuts, fruit from local farms, organic jams and home-baked bread; meals are served al fresco on the patio or shared in the communal dining room.
Explore the area by bike or on horseback. Take a boat excursion and fish for your supper. Immerse yourself in the ancient history of the area, or head for the beach just a couple of miles away.

Location
The neighbourhood
Don’t miss the Valle dei Templi (three miles), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and outstanding example of Hellenic architecture. Nearby Agrigento, founded in 582 BC, is another marvel of Ancient Greece. The chalky cliffs of Scala de Turchi (12 mins), carved by the wind and sea, are a natural wonder. For fans of Andrea Camilleri's novels, Porto Empedocle (10 mins) is the author’s birthplace.
Local points of interest from Mara Arcidiacono
- Valle dei Templi – the Valley of the Temples – is undoubtedly the most important vestige of ancient classical culture in Sicily. It comprises the temples of the gods, as well as the necropolis area and the extra-moenia sanctuaries.
- Scala dei Turchi - Of the many staircases you may know, this is certainly one of the most unusual. You have already realised that this is not a real staircase, but a spectacular stretch of coastline that has become a Sicilian tourist seascape icon thanks to its special features.
- Porto Empeclode - You haven't made a mistake, it refers to the (imaginary and composite) city described by Andrea Camilleri in his novels. In fact, the writer was born here and in the main street you can admire a bronze statue in natural proportions depicting his character Inspector Montalbano.
- Punta Bianca is La Scala dei Turchi’s smaller more secluded twin sister – it’s the perfect alternate! Just 30 kilometers away, Punta Bianca Beach rewards with unparalleled seclusion and a Mediterranean pearl-like spectacle like no other beach in Italy.
- Agrigento - Founded around 582 BC by Greek colonists from Gela, Agrigento, then known as Akragas, was one of the leading cities during the golden age of Ancient Greece.
- The House of Pirandello - Luigi Pirandello was a an Italian dramatic novelist, poet and short story writer in the late 19th- early 20th century. Important innovator in modern drama, he won a Nobel Prize in Literature just a few years before his death.

Introducing
Mara Arcidiacono
Warm and welcoming, Mara has worked in the hospitality industry since she was 18. She and her husband Domenico realised their dream of owning their own place when they bought the derelict borgo, which had been empty since WW2. Mara is a great source of local knowledge and happy to recommend restaurants and arrange excursions for you.
The property is authentic and merges perfectly with the landscape. There is a wild and romantic atmosphere with a touch of elegance and history thanks to the stone building. Mara is really welcoming, friendly and she knows the area well.
