The Experience

This beautiful 17th-century house was built over a sixth-century oil press and is filled with interesting things. A series of beautiful rooms, ranging from fairytale (a froth of lace and toile) to endearingly simple (madras bedcovers and old desks) to formal (antique armoires and gilt frames)… a gloriously eclectic mix.

Breakfasts are organic with homemade cake every day and there are ‘surprise’ dinners cooked by the chef, who specialises in Puglian dishes accompanied by good local wines. You eat either in the arched dining room or outside in the candle-lit courtyard. It will linger in your memory – as will other details: an exterior white stone stairway climbing to a bedroom, an arched doorway swathed in wisteria.

You are looked after by a large, very friendly team and surrounded by lush countryside. Walk among olive trees which are more than a thousand years old, or head to sandy beaches – the hotel can give you a lunch box.

Reviews

This is a stunning place to stay. From the moment we arrived we were looked after by smiling, helpful and well organised staff. The beautiful lush gardens create a peaceful ambience, and the lovely pool is set in a meadow of ancient olive trees. The set evening meal, a long affair, was the best we had in Puglia. We relaxed instantly and were sorry only to have had one night there.

Il Frantoio is a special location in the amazing countryside of Valle d’Itria. The masseria is impressive as a whole, the service is excellent and the atmosphere takes you back in time. Strategic location, charming home and agritourism company: a perfect combination of hospitality, cuisine and atmosphere.

Maria Beatrice, Sawday's Inspector

Walking into the main courtyard for the first time is spectacular. Like going back in time and staying on a prosperous Italian estate. The limestone courtyard and building is elegant and grand, and our vaulted room was beautifully appointed with simple antique furniture. The reception rooms are huge and full of fascinating objects. After a tour and short history by the owner we were served a beautiful dinner, typical regional food, by a roaring log fire (it is cold in Puglia in March). The grounds are specatular, parterre citrus gardens, 1000 year old olive trees groves with views of the sea.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're deep in the Valle d'Itria, surrounded by the enchanting countryside of Ostuni, a few kilometers from the sea and the "Dune Costiere" Regional Park, between Torre Canne and Torre San Leonardo. Less than a 10-minute drive will take you to fine sandy beaches such as Lido Bizzarro. Explore Ostuni, the 'White City' with its winding streets, cathedral and old city walls.

Introducing

Luciano Sonzini

Armando and Rosalba Balestrazzi bought the masseria in 1990, which had been abandoned for 20 years and is one of the oldest in Puglia (1500). They no longer live there but you are looked after beautifully by many more staff than is usually the case - almost one for each guest!
