A walled haven for grown-ups in search of peace and relaxation. The glorious Adriatic and some fine Italian towns may be only half an hour away, but many people stay by the infinite-sunset pool, soaking up the sun, the herb-scented air and that hilltop sense of belonging to the landscape. Breakfast is a happy, convivial affair, with guests encouraged to chatter at a communal table; afterwards perhaps wander down to the infinity pool with its loungers and umbrellas – views soar to the surrounding hills. Peckish? Make your own lunch with tomatoes from the garden and olive oil from the kitchen: your hosts, Noemi and Eugenio, are friendly and hugely generous. You may settle down with a book in one of two lounges, one with a fire for chillier days, or read up on what to do round and about. No real walks from the door but you can drive then hike till you drop. Return to beams, antiques, hand-painted tiles and smart family linen which lends an air of class to the rebuilt old house, its compact but pretty bedrooms and luxurious bathrooms. Perfect for a house-party.
