The Experience
The 400-year-old walls of this Marche farmhouse conceal an elegant renovation: open plan living and clean lines, comfortable doubles, spacious en suites and a sleek kitchen with all the gadgets you’ll need. Barbecue buffs – head straight for the terrace to cook over wood on the sculptural barbecue-come-pizza oven.
Underfloor heating keeps the communal space cosy, where chic sofas are gathered round an imposing traditional fireplace. Shelves are filed with books and games – sneak away to the snug for a little privacy. Green-fingered Jane and Martin designed the terraced garden; jasmine and wisteria drape over the pergola and cypress trees pierce the sky.
Embrace the tranquillity of your hilltop escape; float in the pool, stroll to the local bar or bike up into the hills. Take your time over breakfast on the sun-soaked terrace with stunning views of hilltop villages, and round it all off with a game of Italian bowls on the bocce pitch.

Location
The neighbourhood
The house perches on a rural hillside, set away from the quiet road in its own landscaped gardens with valley views; there are a few other houses dotted around nearby. The local bar is a hilly 20-minute walk and, helpfully, also hires out e-bikes. The nearest shops for supplies are at Treia, a 10-minute drive. The forested hills behind are great for trekking and biking, and the coast is an hour's drive.
Local points of interest from Jane Reid
- Treia is famous for the game ball and bracelet - Disfida del Bracciale played by nobles from 1818. The final is on the first Sunday in August, and just beforehand many participants dress in Renaissance period costumes and parade through the town.
- The Sferisterio Opera Festival in Macerata is held from late July to mid-August, hosting thousands of spectators each year to the open air 3000 seat neoclassical arena. Besides the opera season the arena hosts light music, jazz concerts, pop and rock bands
- The Frasassi Caves are a must do experience when coming to the area. Situated inside the Regional Natural Park of Gola Rossa. This spectacular tour proceeds along walkways through a natural sequence of stalactites and stalagmites, water pools and rock pits
- The Marche beaches stretch along 180 km of coastline with Mount Conero being the highest point at 572 metres. Here are some of the most beautiful beaches in the area with crystal blue water and dramatic scenery.
- Marche is best known as a white wine region, with Trebbiano and Verdicchio grapes and the high quality reds, are generally made from Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Marco's Way offers customised wine tours so you can experience fabulous local wines.
- Stay local and ramble the tracks and woods where wild flowers are plentiful. Watch hoopoes forage and colourful Bee-eaters catch insects on the wing. Or sit back to see swifts and swallows circle in late afternoon and descend to the pool for a drink.

Introducing
Jane Reid
Proud owners Jane and Martin and their friendly pooch live in the attached house – they are charming and friendly, and on hand with advice for the barbecue and the local area, but generally let guests enjoy the peace unless they are needed. With backgrounds in horticulture and design, they created the impressive garden which is the absolute star of the show.
Jane and Martin, the owners of La Cerqua, were very welcoming and the house is comfortable and the renovations have been done to a very high standard, as a result the house is elegant and very modern. The outside space is exceptional, with outdoor kitchen and seating areas, the surrounding countryside is beautiful with excellent views from the house. Great area for walking and cycling!
