The Experience
Once you’ve negotiated the steep and windy access drive, you are rewarded with sensational views over Santa Margherita. Roberto, a Ligurian farmer, inherited the house from his grandfather in a dilapidated state; he’s made a few changes! He is a wonderful host and loves this place, deep in the country but within sight of the sea.
Enjoy breakfast or a glass of wine from the terrace and gaze down the coast: a treat. Each bedroom is colourful, spotless, simply furnished and decorated with dried flowers. Bright bedcovers dress grandfather’s beds, muslin curtains flutter at windows, old framed prints hang on the walls and many shower rooms are tiny.
A small shed has been converted into a useful kitchen so you can rustle up snacks. Apart from the hoot of the train and the faint hum of the traffic below, the only sound to break the peace is birdsong. Forget the hire car: paths lead to most of the villages and there are buses from the gate.

We stayed with Roberto for 3 nights on our way to Tuscany. Fantastic views, a great base to explore the Portofino Peninsula. We personally preferred the less touristy towns like Camogli and Santa Margherita to Portofino - though it does look stunning from the ferry when it docks. Stay on the ferry to San Fruttuoso instead. And watch the sun set with stunning views over Camogli and Genoa beyond, over fabulous aperitvos at Bar Da Nicco in Ruta di Camogli.

A delightful, and yet accessible hideaway. Truly lives up to the write-up.... And more so. Roberto goes out of his way to be helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. And his English is very good! Breakfast on that sunny terrace is an unforgettable experience: the view, the delicious food, the pleasant company, if you want it. The balcony is also great for an evening picnic, with food bought from the wonderful delis in Santa Margherita. I'm not saying any more because I want to be sure there's still space for us when we go back, as many guests do!

My friends and I have just returned from a lovely holiday in Villa Gnocchi. Roberto is a wonderful host who is there to give advise if required but if not, just leaves you alone to enjoy the wonderful scenery. The Villa is charming and very clean and our room had a wonderful panoramic view overlooking Santa Margherita. Thank you Roberto and team for a lovely stay.

We really loved this place. Roberto was a great host, he was very helpful suggesting things to do and places to visit. He also had a wonderful, dry sense of humour. The views are stunning and the atmosphere very relaxed, breakfast on the terrace was a real treat. The rooms were a good size and had lovely indvidual touches - possibly our favourite place on this trip.

Roberto is the one who makes this a special place to stay. He is an excellent host and looks shocked should you mention the idea of consulting Tourist Information. He has extensive local knowledge and Villa Gnocchi is an excellent centre for exploring the many marked walks criss-crossing the Portofino National Park. Indeed it is perfectly possible to manage here without a hire car as the public transport links are excellent. Villa Gnocchi is set in a spectacular spot in an area of great beauty. The rooms are colourful and spotless and the breakfast excellent. We met several couples who were here for the third and fourth time, and you can see why!

Introducing
Roberto Gnocchi
You’ll be warmly greeted by Roberto when you arrive and the welcome will stay with you throughout. He and his brood have called this hillside treasure home for over 25 years and it’s been in his family for generations. The pride he feels for the property and the area is infectious. Ask for expert local knowledge and the insider scoop on how to make the best of your Italian riviera adventures.
A beautiful, peaceful agriturismo. We loved looking out over the olive terraces from our private terrace. The pool was excellent with similar views. Lovely breakfasts with charming staff. The owner, Roberto, was very helpful. People should be aware of the many steps and changes of level, natural for the site. Also, the steep winding access road is better for the smaller car or the brave driver - leave the Porsche at home! What would have made our stay absolutely perfect would have been simple suppers available to buy on the beautiful terrace - even just at the weekends! We loved the 2 donkeys.
