The Experience

A dirt road flanked by cypress cuts through the Lazio Maremma – a landscape shaped by centuries of olive farming. The old hunting lodge has changed little since 1610, aside from the lovely new swimming pool and tasting pavilion. Napoleon liked this country palace so much he sequestered it for his brother; the Bonaparte crest is still carved above the entrance.

There’s an easy, relaxed atmosphere within these thick walls, filled with antiques and grand open hearths. Four bedrooms lead off the intimate sitting room, gather here for cocktails. The apartment has a separate entrance and small kitchen, if you want a bit more privacy.

In spring and summer, amble down to the garden for a superb breakfast spread of farm produce – pastries, preserves, cheeses and fresh coffee. Don’t miss a tasting with owner and olive oil expert Simona; visit Etruscan ruins and hot spring spas, or request a light lunch by the pool.

Reviews

I have known the facility for about 20 years and without knowing it I was the first guest! Since then, I have come to relax here in Tuscia a couple of times a year. This structure with its proverbial welcome reflects my desire for tranquillity, far from the chaos of the city. The owners are always very available for my every need, with kindness and discretion. The structure, despite being a renovated period stately home that belonged to the Bonapartes, reflects in every environment the comfort necessary for guests who need privacy and relaxation.

Splendida ed accogliente dimora storica gestita in modo elegante e discreto. Posizionata nel mezzo della Tuscia Laziale vicinissima a centri di interesse turistico culturale. Luogo ottimo per tanto relax o turismo di qualità.

Perhaps it'd be enough to say that we've come to Casale Bonaparte already three times and we are planning to come back very soon! The Casale is immersed in the countryside and It's the perfect place to deeply relax. It's a very refined structure but with no ostentation whatsoever. There is plenty to do and to discover in this area. The most enjoyable thing is to then get back to the Casale and jump in their lovely swimming pool. The hosts are super helpful and attentive. Breakfast, which in the summer is served outdoor on their beautiful lawn, is delicious and offer many local products

Accommodation curated with attention to the smallest details, very refined and comfortable room. Breakfast served in the garden with home-grown products. Swimming pool with hydro massage surrounded by greenery, equipped with sunbeds and structures for relaxing in the shade. Cleanliness, tidiness and courtesy of the staff are impeccable. Excellent value for money. Highly recommended!

This award-winning olive oil estate is a historical treasure that screams authenticity. Nothing is invented or left undone. The estate is carefully managed with an eye to its transformation into a destination/experience for those wishing to touch, feel and taste vintage agricultural Maremma. A 'buttero' cowboy and his olive oil 'sommelier' wife create a perfect team to frame this effort successfully.

Location

The neighbourhood

Isolated in a vast landscape of olive farms and cattle ranches, Casale Bonaparte is framed by manicured lawns. The local restaurant, five minutes away, specialises in steak – the beef from the Maremma is world-renowned. Your hosts can arrange a day at the hot spring spa, a 10-minute drive. Explore the Vulci Etruscan Archaeological Park, 20 mins. The train station at Montalto di Castro is one hour away.

Local points of interest from Simona Archibusacci

  • HERMITAGE OF POGGIO CONTE It is one of the most magical places in Tuscia immersed in an uninhabited &wild place today, created with the sole strength of the arms by digging and modeling these environments dedicated to worship on the banks of the FioraRiver
  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF VULCI 5" from the farmhouse you can admire the excavations of the ancient Etruscan-Roman metropolis and the noble Etruscan tombs, all immersed in uncontaminated nature. Sports activities on the river, there are two refreshment points
  • LAKE BOLSENA AND THE ISLAND OF BISENTINA The Bisentina Island, attractive and sinuous like a beautiful woman, is an interesting tourist excursion with its basilicas for those who go to Lake Bolsena with its clear waters, ideal for taking a nice swim
  • SELVA DEL LAMONE In one of the loneliest and most remote corners of Lazio, this protected area preserves a harsh and wild forest, at times impenetrable, formed on a "young" lava flow dating back to the period between 150,000 and 50,000 years ago
  • TARQUINIA Etruscan city 10 km from the sea on a hill above the Marta river valley. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, the Necropolis of Monterozzi is famous for its wonderful tombs painted with Etruscan art
  • TUSCANIA, the city of 12 churches, a medieval fortified city that endured centuries of papal oppression and a devastating earthquake, but which was later able to be reborn from its ruins and regain its ancient splendor

Introducing

Simona Archibusacci

Simona and her husband, a fourth-generation ‘buttero’ or Maremma cowboy, run a farm producing top-quality olive oil. Simona is an ‘oil sommelier’ and recognised authority on olive oil; tastings in their lovely pavilion are in high demand. The family live on the top floor of the house, are on hand to help but mostly leave their guests to soak up the atmosphere in peace.
