The Experience

Small and special, an artistic find behind solid green doors. Fashion and textiles designer Luisa transformed her studio and home many years ago adding three guest bedrooms. Her son Ascanio skilfully manages guests. Built around a beautiful sun-dappled courtyard, the house is a showcase for Luisa’s creations. Two bedrooms, Tinto and Chocolate, are on the ground floor opening to the courtyard (a marvel in spring) while the Rome room above has its own big terrace.

Walls are clean and minimalist, bathrooms mosaic’d and sparkling; splashes of colour come from hand-painted organza. Yours to retire to — a winter treat — is a salon with stylish sofas and books on art and Rome. Charming staff, friendly and discreet, serve breakfast at an oval dining table surrounded by silk panels: fresh fruits, breads, meats, eggs how you like them.

Book onto a cookery class with Paola and Carlo, the chefs at Piazza San Cosimato; explore Rome.

Reviews

My Family absolutely loved staying at Buonanotte Garibaldi. We were made to feel so welcome and it was heaven to return to our sanctuary in Trastevere after a long, hot day exploring Rome. We could not have chosen better and were recommended some fabulous restaurants to go to locally. I would recommend Buonanotte Garibaldi very highly. Thankyou very much for having us. Luisa and Ascanio's careful attention to detail and customized guest stay is notorious and for this reason the art-filled accommodation has its share of habitué' guests. It can be your umpteenth time in Rome, but Ascanio will lead you to yet another hidden treasure in his beloved city and only to restaurants and shops that he frequents, avoiding the tourists.

Nicole, Sawday's Inspector

This is a beautiful guest house and the studio of artist Luisa Longo, beautifully appointed, comfortable and friendly, with service second to none. Situated in a lively neighbourhood, with many restaurants, there is a tram stop close by for a five-minute ride into the centre (Piazza Venezia), or a ten-minute walk to the Vatican. My wife and I could not have wished for more.

Location

The neighbourhood

Cross the Tiber into maze-like Trastevere. You're in the centre of the dining neighbourhood, the streets lined with trattorias and cafés — ask Ascanio for tips to avoid tourists and live like a Roman. Visit the Botanical Gardens, Villa Farnesina, Villa Corsini and a hidden Bernini statue in the church of San Francesco a Ripa. Walk up the hill (half an hour or so) to get the best city views.

Introducing

Ascanio Balbo

Having a long international career as an artist and textile designer, Luisa shows her work in every corner of her home — and not just on the walls. Wall hangings, chairs, curtains and bedspreads are included and the result is beautiful and colourful. Actor son Ascanio has returned to Rome after studying abroad to take on the role of manager, and adds special itineraries and experiences for guests.
