The Experience
This 17th-century family castle is now divided into various residences to form a private hamlet. Grand del Conte is heirloom-filled and each room decorated with original frescoes. It’s big with two living rooms, two fireplaces and a huge kitchen, knockout vistas from each window and its own terrace too. Sweet La Torretta (a tower on three levels) is the perfect love nest for two: nicely private and charmingly informal.
Easy-going La Mola was the old olive press, now it’s a comfortable space for four with lovely exposed stone walls. There’s a lush garden too, which you can rent separately, filled with roses, cypress trees, spaces to sit and a pool. Dine at their very good restaurant in the village, Le Cucine del Borgo.
This is lovely countryside, perfect for gentle walks. Strike out for olive tours and tastings, abbeys, Roman archaeological sites, hiking, cycling or catch the train to Rome — the staff can help with everything.

An easy drive from Rome brought us to the secluded wooded hills around Roccantica. Marzina’s Borgo is an elegant and romantic place, full of fascinating art, with sublime views around every corner. The tastefully designed and furnished Torretta was so comfortable and being built right into the city walls, the far reaching views from every window were captivating. Marzina was the perfect host and the pool and gardens were outstanding. Sitting by the pool, eating plums from the trees and soaking in the sublime views is a memory we will cherish . We enjoyed exploring the warren

A magical weekend getaway from Rome! It was a short, pleasant drive. We felt like royalty the moment we stepped into del Conte apartment. Alongside the historic and beautiful things, the apartment has every modern comfort. In unseasonably cold weather, it was soul-warming to step into a warm apartment, with modern bathrooms, wonderfully hot showers, wi-fi, and then to have the fireplace-well, it was difficult to leave! The art in the apartment & views outside are stunning. The food at Le Cucine del Borgo was simply marvelous. Ali made us feel like we had come home to family. We will be back.

2nd review because it's worth saying twice! We came back to the Borgo because we had such a wonderful stay the first time in 2017. The upgrades to the apartment (two brand new bathrooms, TV with Netflix and Amazon etc) have been good improvements on what was already hard to improve. Again, the host and caretakers have taken excellent care of us, and the restaurant below still has delicious food. Quiet, peaceful, charming and beautiful place. We're pleased to call ourselves regulars now, and shall certainly keep returning.

We loved our week staying here. A little quirky, artie and very beautiful. Marzina kept us well informed with details of the place and how to get there, and Ali was on hand when we needed anything, but only when we asked - all beautifully discreet and private. You really need a car to stay here, but once here, it's hard to pull oneself away. Fantastic views from the Torretto, gorgeous walks through the village and forest, and our best chilled out holiday for years. We are already planning our return visit - can't say better than that!

Our stay at the Appartemente del Conte was wonderful from start to finish. Marzina, Tiziana and Ali took excellent care of us, and we appreciated the little extra touches (coffee, eggs and milk all ready and waiting on arrival, along with some excellent local olive oil for us to try). The apartment has lots of old rustic charm and has clearly seen centuries of life but was spotlessly clean and comfy. The pool and garden were fabulous, and we urge every future guest to eat downstairs at the excellent restaurant, Cucine del Borgo. The Borgo, Roccantica and Sabina Hills gave us a magical holiday.

Location
The neighbourhood
Explore ancient caves, the hermitage of San Leonardo and Pozzo del Diavolo waterfalls. The nearest town is Casperia (5km) for a grocery store, butcher, artisan shops and bars. The Vigna outdoor terrace is wonderful for an aperitivo and the sunset. 2km down the road is the Roseto Vacunae Rosae - Italy's largest rose garden, with 5000 varieties. There are plenty of food and music festivals in summer.
Local points of interest from Marzina Marzetti
- The Borgo is marked by history throughout the centuries and is renowned for its interesting architecture, which is proudly preserved. The elegance and luxury of the residence and the enchanting nature of the Sabina countryside blend together harmoniously.
- The ancient kitchens of the palace now host the LE CUCINE DEL BORGO restaurant; a unique setting given the charm of the surroundings and the panoramic view over the green, unspoilt valley below, still well away from busy tourist routes. Menu 25-35€.
- During the summer months there is usually a fête of some sort on in different villages across Sabina, often two nearby on the same day, due to a lack of communication and traditional rivalry between neighbouring village.
- Rome is easily reached by train in 45/50 mins from Poggio Mirteto station -15 mins away with free parking. €9.30 for a day ticket covering the train, metro and all buses in the city -
- The hot mineral Spa at Viterbo is a favourite with visitors, as is the old papal town itself, whereas a visit to the waterfall at Marmore could be combined with a visit to the Franciscan monastery at Greccio.
- The fascinating "monster" park at Bomarzo is about an hour away with gigantic statues and grotesques from the 16th century.

Introducing
Marzina Marzetti
The Marzetti family bought the highest part of the castle in the mid-1900s as a summer getaway from the city. Daughter Marzina transformed some of the apartments for guests 20 years ago while also keeping space for the family. As the director of a leading art gallery in New York, Marzina goes back and forth. When she's not there you are greeted by the property manager Tiziana.
Marzina's well-equipped and well-appointed apartments within this jewel of a place in the Sabina area offer guests an inside view of village life where the concept of slow living originated. Silence reigns in the pedestrian-only village where it is easy to take off from your accommodation on one of many hiking trails. Come back for a prosecco in the rose garden overlooking the valley and dream.
