The Experience

Getting here is half the fun and you won’t need a car, so jump on the ferry at Formia and spend a couple of merry hours zipping across crystal-clear waters in the dazzling sunshine. A ten-minute walk through colourful streets will then take you to your first-floor apartment with high ceilings and large windows letting the light flood in. Find sleek furniture, a collection of bird paintings on silk from Budan and comfortable seating.

The kitchen is modern and well equipped and you’re welcomed by a hamper of seasonal produce and local wine. Owner Anna also runs a nearby restaurant, Il Giardino, serving typical island dishes, so you can choose not to cook. Bedrooms (both en suite) are roomy, uncluttered and restful.

The rooftop terrace is a grand spot for an al fresco dinner or a glass of wine while you gaze at the 180-degree view and spectacular sunsets over the sea. Or soak up the atmosphere with an aperitif at one of the cafés in the square.

Reviews

A charming and typical Italian flat from the 1900s with bright, spacious interiors and a beautiful terrace perfect for al fresco dining in the evenings. Located just a 10-minute walk from the harbour and right on the main square, you can fully immerse yourself in the Italian "dolce vita" and enjoy the local slow-paced lifestyle.

Location

The neighbourhood

Less than two square kilometres, the island is very beautiful with sandy beaches, high rugged cliffs and turquoise seas – this is a Marine Protected Area. There are gorgeous colourful houses in the main square, bustling cafés and shops and Anna's good restaurant, Il Giardino. Take a boat trip, walk or cycle, swim in the sea while the sun sets – this is a romantic place.

Local points of interest from Anna

  • Walk in the nature at sunset with knowledge and foraging of edible wild herbs with a local guide.
  • Island tour by canoe with a guide.Take a dive in the rocks in front of the Roman port between the Roman salt pans and the Roman fish breeding tanks.
  • From March till May you can observe some small migratory birds. Ventotene is among the most important islands in the Mediterranean for the passage of migratory birds on the Africa-Northern Europe route.
  • Participate in the construction and painting workshops of the traditional hot air balloons created for Santa Candida's celebration every year on the 20th of September.
  • Visit the Roman cisterns, an ancient engineering work of rainwater collection and distribution.
  • Eat the traditional local lentil soup and buy taralli with wild fennel in the only bakery on the island.
