The Experience

On a tranquil side street within striking distance of the elegant porticoes of Via Farini and the shops and restaurants of Via Garibaldi, just beyond the majestic Palazzo Pizzardi, this family-run hotel has been managed by the Stegani-Stagni clan for three generations.

There’s a warm welcome on arrival. Rooms are smart, contemporary and inviting, each one slightly different. Some have private balconies or terraces (with views of the landmark Two Towers from a few), all have tea/coffee facilities and TVs. Bathrooms are luxurious with rainfall or cascade showers, while beds are generous and soft with super-smooth Percale linens. Splash out for a suite with a soaring frescoed ceiling.

There are plenty of shared areas to relax in, notably the top-floor terrace bar with fantastic views over the city’s red rooftops and medieval towers, and a comfortable lounge on the ground floor with a roaring fire in the winter and plenty of books.

Reviews

The magic of an ancient place expertly renovated – comfortable and elegant at the same time. You will experience authentic hospitality in the beating heart of Bologna, in one of the most representative areas of the romantic, Renaissance and Baroque style of the city.

Location

The neighbourhood

Most places are easily walkable. Café Zanarini serves excellent coffees, pastries and cakes, with terrace tables for evening aperitifs. The Quadrilatero food market promises a feast for all the senses. Gallerie Cavour (five minutes' walk) is a shopper's paradise. Sample traditional dishes at La Bottega di Franco and Restaurant Colombina. Take a bus (10 mins) to the glorious Margherita gardens.

Local points of interest from Silvana Stagni

  • The Basilica of San Domenico (Basilica di San Domenico) is one of the richest churches in Bologna in art history and was erected by the Dominican Friars as a place to store the remains of San Domenico di Guzman.
  • The heart of the city, Piazza Maggiore is the result of centuries-old transformations that gradually enriched it with important buildings: the Basilica of San Petronio, the Palazzo dei Notai, the Palazzo d’Accursio, the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo dei Banchi.
  • The two towers are commonly recognized as symbols of Bologna and are located in the heart of the city at the point where the ancient Via Emilia (Aemilian Way) entered the city.
  • Passing under the Porta Govese or Torresotto dei Piella you reach the famous window on the Canale delle Moline and the bridge, both overlooking the canal. This corner of the city is known as "little Venice".
  • Santo Stefano is the most unique complex in Bologna, as it is a true city sanctuary and the cradle of our ancestor’s faith. It is mainly known as “sette chiese” (“seven churches”) because it is the merger of multiple buildings erected in different eras.
  • The Sanctuary of San Luca, located on Colle della Guardia, has been the symbol of Bologna as well as a place of religious worship for centuries. Unwinds for four kilometres with a portico that boasts over 600 archways and is the longest in the world.

Introducing

Silvana Stagni

The Stegani-Stagni family have run the hotel since it was established in the 1950s and some of the rooms are named after the grandparents. Silvana and her sister Manuela are in charge, with children Matteo and Giorgia taking care of the day-to-day running of the hotel.
