Down the strada bianca, through the macchia where lizards scuttle and owls hoot… to Cannito, immersed in wilderness. Once the summer residence of friars, now wondrously restored – a heart-warming place. Food is prepared with love, and style; bedrooms are immaculate havens; bathrooms are sanctuaries to linger in. The Gorga family – mother, son, two daughters – greet you warmly and nothing is too much trouble. Two of the rooms sit below the main building, reached by steps lit at night, sharing a furnished stone terrace. All have big beds, modern art, designer chairs, beautiful linen (three have hydromassage baths). Visit Paestum and its temples, and the clifftop villages of the Cilento National Park; take a boat tour to hidden caves and coves; you have access to the hotel’s private beach too, with sunbeds and umbrellas. Return to 15 hectares of shimmering butterflies and ancient oaks, exceptional views to the Isle of Capri, perhaps lunch by the infinity pool and a sundowner from a lounger.
