The Experience
The Benedictine sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola dominates the skyline – you glimpse it from your terrace – pull on your walking shoes and puff up a winding flight of stone steps cut into the cliff. At the top is a simple church, pretty gardens and dramatic views over the bustling town with its 12th-century Duomo and out to sea. On a clear day you can see Stromboli.
You stay in a spacious apartment (one sleeps six, one eight) within an old palazzo teetering above the sea. Eat meals in the kitchen/diner or out on the terrace as the sounds of tourists and townsfolk drift up from the sandy beach below.
Live like a local and take a passeggiata down Corso Vittorio Emanuele, hang out in the main square, Piazza Ercole, people watching and drinking cappuccino; take a ferry over to Stromboli Island and hike up the active volcano. Head home for deep sleeps – bedrooms at the back lack views so plump for one at the front with a sea-facing balcony.

Location
The neighbourhood
You can walk to everything: good restaurants, the buzzing main square, Piazza Ercole, sandy beaches - reached via steep steps or a zig-zag road - and the marina. Hire a private boat or take a ferry to Stromboli Island, one of the seven Aeolian Islands, for the day. The seafood here is renowned, as are red onions – there’s even a gelato made from them (try if you dare!) and a museum dedicated to them. Hugely popular with Italians - locals call Tropea the pearl of the Calabrian coast.
Local points of interest from Francesca Adilardi
- The apartments are at the end of the main road in the historic centre and they overlook the sea. Nearby, there are many boutiques, bars, ice cream shops, restaurants and local food shops. You will find everything you need!
- The balcony overlooking the sea conveys the impression of being on a boat with all of the comforts of an apartment. The apartment is lodged in the rock and it has beautiful ancient arches and amazing vaults and walls.
- One can reach the beach directly by taking the stairs down just a few minutes from the proprieties or from the famous stairs 2 del Cannone, which are less steep and will lead you to the other side of the beach.
- Fall asleep and wake up gently rocked by the sound of the waves; from the balcony one can admire the beautiful sunset over Stromboli and the Aeolian Islands. Along the road there are many agencies that organise excursions to the Aeolian Islands.

Beautiful appartment with stunning views of the sea - we couldn't have been happier here. Lovely to be in such a peaceful appartment but have such a buzzy and lovely town on our doorstep plus amazing beaches.
