The Experience

You are hardly aware of it but you are on an island with the Atlantic lapping your big garden and the mountains of Kerry forming part of your view; if you are not inspired by this landscape then you have no soul.

Wander down to the water to picnic on benches; sit out on the terrace on clear nights under starry skies. Wild swimmers will be happy here with their own access to the ocean. Inside there’s an open fireplace and shaggy pile rugs to keep you warm and cosy, a sun room with wraparound windows and an open-plan kitchen for sociable meals.

Stretch your legs on a two-hour walk along the Ring of Kerry to colourful Sneem for sea kayaking, a sculpture trail, fairy trails and plenty of pubs and places to eat. Visit pink coral beach (20 minutes’ drive)- a geological wonder and one of only two in the country.

This is a special place - a great combination of stunning scenery and dramatic weather. On the last morning in perfect light and calm sea we had a Blue Planet moment as the bay filled with seabirds, mainly gannets and cormorants, in a feeding frenzy with several dolphins joining in. The hares honoured us with their presence several times.

Location

The neighbourhood

Cross a few small bridges and wend along small lanes to arrive on this tiny island just off the mainland. It’s a remote part of the country but you won’t be alone – there are other houses scattered about and a few other houses in the cul-de-sac. You're then on the main Ring of Kerry and Wild Atlantic Way so there’s stunning scenery either way you go.

On an island, separated from the mainland by an old stone bridge, Seal Rock Cottage is a little piece of heaven!
Stroll through the garden, right down to the water and dip your toes into Kenmare Bay. Look out for seals and otters swimming across the bay and the resident family of hares in the garden. Rossmore Island has also recently become home to some Red Deer.
Drive into nearby Kenmare and treat yourself to a meal in one of the town's gourmet restaurants and hotels. Or stock up on delicious local produce from the local bakers, butchers and deli and from the weekly street market.
Take a drive along the Beara peninsula and stop off for a pint of the black stuff and a mouthwatering crab sandwich at the famous McCarthy's Bar in Castletownbeare.
Treat yourself to a day of pampering bliss at the spa at Parknasilla Hotel - just a 10 minute drive away. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious cream tea on the terrace and drink in the amazing views across the water.
