The Experience
At this homely cottage beneath the Kerry Dark Sky Reserve, you can explore sandy beaches by day and gaze at galaxies by night. Built centuries ago this rustic, whitewashed farmhouse is circled by fields and hills. Walks start from the door and you’re a kilometre from both the coast and the Ring of Kerry. The closest beach White Strand is stunning, popular with locals but never crowded.
The kitchen is well kitted out with everything you need to rustle up hearty meals. A wood-burner warms the big, old-fashioned dining room, there’s a comfy sitting room with a TV for rainy days, and three cosy bedrooms upstairs.
Families will love the sandy beaches – snorkel, kayak, paddle board. Take a trip to the Skellig Islands, an ancient monastic settlement; wander around chic Waterville; visit Derrynane house. The Wild Atlantic Way and the Ring of Kerry are yours to explore.

I had a most wonderful stay here earlier this year. The cottage oozes rustic charm, with lovely features and thoughtful dressing, reflecting the heritage of the beautiful country. The surroundings are mesmerizing, peaceful and idyllic. It's a perfect place to relax with friends and/or family. I will definitely be going back there.

I stayed there for a week last August and was delighted by the calmness and serenity of the place. It was close to amenities and acted as a great staging post for other places such as Kerry, Sneem and killarney.

We had the most magical stay at this lovely cottage in Kerry. The sun shone all week; we swam in the sea everyday and cooked delicious meals every evening then watched the stars come out. There's lots to explore and the cottage is comfy and cosy and perfect for a small group.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're on the Ring of Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way: head off in either direction for stunning scenery, beautiful beaches and quaint towns. It's a short drive to O'Carroll's Cove, a family-friendly spot for swimming and sandcastle building with a beachside café/restaurant. Derrynane House, home of Daniel O'Connell is 9km; hire kayak and paddle boards here. Sneem, 15km, has a range of shops.
Local points of interest from Kitty O'Shea
- Beautiful scenery and unspoilt beaches. Mountains tumble into the sea and are fringed by rugged shores and unspoilt beaches. A 20 minute stroll from the house will take you to the secluded Cove Strand another 15 minutes takes you to White Strand Beach.
- Derrynane House and National Park are just 6 miles away. As well as the Daniel O’Connell museum and beautiful gardens the park has walks around the woodlands, a fairy trail, tea rooms and one of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland.
- Sea sports, nature trails, horse riding and fishing are all available in the local area. From motorised kayaking to exploring rock pools, golf to sea, river and lake fishing, there are a wide array of ways to explore and discover Kenmare Bay.
- The Iveragh Peninsula is abundant with historic sites including rock art, stone circles, ring forts and castles. Books are provided in the house to help you discover the hidden history of the area.
- Kerry produces some of the best sea food in Europe and local fare is outstanding. Locally there are several great bars, restaurants and Tea Rooms. Many cafes and restaurants in the local towns include local specialities on the menu.
- The cottage is within the Kerry Dark Sky reserve. A gold tier reserve, one of only 3 in the world, the area has minimal light pollution and, on a clear night, the sky is alight with the most amazing display of starts, planets and galaxies.

Introducing
Kitty O'Shea
The farmhouse was renovated in 2009 by Nancy, Kitty (mother and daughter) and their family. To celebrate the craftsmanship of the building many of the original features were restored. The family live in England and organise your booking; when you arrive you let yourself in with the key from the safe. Property manager, Aileen, lives nearby and can be contacted if you need anything during your stay.
As a keen hiker this cottage is a great base, I have stayed 4 times. It is tucked away in the foothills of Macgillycuddy's Reeks and is an ideal for hiking. I have walked much of the beautiful Kerry Way and many of the Reeks, including the impressive Carrauntoohil. There are stunning beaches nearby and the pubs are great (one is only about 1k away, down the lane). There are many choices for eating out, the fresh sea food is amazing, and lots of local events. The cottage itself is a roomy, homely place to stay with generous gardens surrounded by wild woodland and nature. I will be staying again
