The Experience

This lovely old restored farm building, sitting on a secluded lane, is just the ticket for those in need of a retreat. You’re surrounded by nature and untrammelled countryside, the garden is a delight and you are fed incredibly well. Wake to breakfasts of home-baked breads and pastries, porridge with prunes soaked in whisky, home-smoked bacon, eggs from the chickens roaming outside. A seven-course tasting dinner has almost zero food miles – Stuart grows most of the vegetables and garnishes and much is supplied by local producers and neighbours.

Bedrooms (one downstairs, one up) are light-filled and pretty with plump beds, crisp cotton and warm blankets, big bathrooms and cosy robes; there’s a separate Cattle Wagon in the garden too. Plan outings from the cosy sitting room in front of the wood-burner, bring your own wine, settle in.

Skibbereen is just a 12-minute drive, there is sublime walking on the Sheep’s Head Way and an exhilarating coastline.

Reviews

There's nothing whimsical or pernickety about this place. Come to be wooed by grand scenery, the freshest air and wonderful walks, toothsome home or locally produced food cooked with passion, very comfortable and attractive bedrooms, super views and a calming atmosphere.

Location

The neighbourhood

Skibbereen, the hub of West Cork, is a thriving little town with some good places to eat, a fascinating Heritage Centre and the best supermarket in Ireland, Fields. From here you can visit some gorgeous little fishing villages, take boat trips to the islands or swim from Tragumna Beach. Lough Hyne nearby is Ireland's first Marine Nature Reserve – kayak at night to view the luminescent algae.

Local points of interest from Stuart Kearney

  • Lough Hyne is just the other side of Skibbereen and is a beautiful and protected nature reserve. It is the only salt water lake in Europe and home to glow in the dark algae which are best viewed by joining a night kayaking tour.
  • Mizen Head is the most south-westerly point in Ireland and the lovely coastel drive to get there is on our doorsstep. There is a visitor centre which has a museum and an amazing cliffside suspension bridge.
  • Sheep's Head is the other peninsula on our doorstep. It has some oldy worldy pubs full of character and an entensive network of hiking trails for all abilities with stunning mountain and sea views.
  • The famous fishing village of Baltimore is 25 minutes drive from us and has frequent ferries to Sherkin Island (15 minutes) and Cape Clear Island (45 minutes).
  • Ballydehob which is West Cork's cultural hub is 15 minutes from us. Check our the regular gigs at Levis' Bar for you fix of authentic Irish music.
  • Skibbereen is our nearest town and is known for it's rowing club which has produced multiple Olympic golf medal winning athletes. There are also the very popular Heritage Centre and Famine Museum to visit, as well as the long-running market every Saturday.
