The Experience
In the ancient Burren landscape, Gregans is elegant and soothing – more like a country house without fuss or tension than a hotel. Owners Simon and Freddy are a particularly warm and efficient couple and want you to have the best possible time.
The food adds to the charm – local chef Robbie uses local ingredients and forages the shoreline and hills for more – wines are expertly matched. You can amble down to a delicious breakfast at nine or ask for an aperitif in the lush garden.
The area is ripe for exploration – borrow bikes and head off on adventures (take Simon’s advice on the best time to visit landmarks like the dramatic Cliffs of Moher to avoid crowds). If you want to learn about the region’s rich ecology and history, guided walks can be arranged.

Location
The neighbourhood
Although the hotel is surrounded by fields and woods, a short walk in any direction finds you on the scoured limestone hills typical of the Burren. You’re a ten-minute drive from the unspoilt town of Ballyvaughan with a clutch of good pubs, and 20 minutes from the dramatic Atlantic coast - eat the famous oysters at Flaggy Shore. For a day trip, catch a ferry from Doolin to the rugged Aran Islands, steeped in history.

Introducing
Simon & Frederieke Haden
Simon took over Gregans from his parents, who retired in 2003 after 27 years at the helm. He and partner Frederieka have updated and modernised the house, enhancing its beauty and sense of history. Freddy was responsible for the colourful interiors, inspired by Irish artists and her parents, who were carpet makers. The couple have also put the hotel on the gastronomic map, nurturing local chefs with a real flair for the region’s ingredients.
