The Experience

In summer you’ll spend most of your time by the beautiful pool and deck overlooking pretty gardens and with views of pastures beyond. There are lots of different areas to sit and sunbathe or have a meal which you can prepare in the smart open-plan kitchen. You’ll also find wine, fruit, fresh vegetables in season and local cheese waiting for you, but it’s only a short walk up the hill into town for stocking up.

On cooler days you can sink into comfortable sofas, admire the cathedral-like ceiling, choose a book, watch television or play one of the board games from the cupboard – if you need further warming there’s a lovely wood-burning stove. Bedrooms have antique embroidered linen sheets and share a big shower room.

Head to markets, interesting fortified towns, or lovely beaches just an hour away, including La Tranche-sur-Mer, wide, sandy and mostly very quiet, even in high season. Lovely to stay for a day out with a picnic.

Reviews

We had the most amazing stay in Piglet. The accommodation is beautifully presented with lots of lovely little touches. There's everything you need but if not, Annie and John are just next door and couldn't be more helpful. Vouvant is a very short walk away and has a handful of bars, restaurants and shops so you can just leave the car and relax if you really need to switch off. We'd highly recommend a stay in Piglet and will most certainly be back.

Kate, Henley-on-Thames

A great place to stay, ideally located for Vouvant, which is a lovely town & a genuine short walk for something to good to eat & drink. Fontenay-le-Comte is an interesting large market town, the coast we found a bit of a schlep. Mervent is worth exploring with pretty forests, lakes & rivers. The owners pool is a good size & adjoins their property. John & Annie were very welcoming & generous hosts.

Richard, Dorking

John and Annie are such perfect hosts and have thought of every comfort’. A fantastic base from which to explore this part of France -although it will be difficult to draw yourselves away from the beautiful garden and pool. We stayed with them many times when they were in Provence and we are so pleased they have managed to create yet another little haven at their new base in France !

Sarah and Owen, Usk

Annie and John are a truly delightful couple. After years in Provence they've recently moved to this lush, quiet corner of the Vendée. The cottage they rent, Piglet, is beside their own beautifully-restored farmhouse but is also quite independent. I love this mysterious corner of France, steeped in folklore and tumultuous history, with the coast within day-trip reach.

Location

The neighbourhood

Vouvant is linked to the legend of the fairy Mélusine and the tower was said to be built by her. You can take a fascinating tour and learn the history. Artists and artisans are attracted to the town and there are excellent restaurants and cafés. The best market is in Fontenay-le-Comte on Saturday mornings, 25 mins in the car. Hire a barque and drift along the canal system, built by monks.

Local points of interest from John & Annie Lupton

  • Vouvant - undoubtedly the most beautiful medieval village in the Vendee with all amenities . A short walk away. Many historical abbeys are to be found around the area.
  • Kayaking within 15 minutes at Mervent.
  • Puy du Fou . An amazing nightly spectacular show . Daytime too. World famous and 45 minutes away. Not to be missed!! Booking easy and not difficult !
  • Beautiful unspoilt quiet beaches on the coast - an hours drive.La Rochelle -a wonderful place to explore.
  • Marais Potevin. The ‘Venice of France with its inland waterways- explorable by boat.
  • Colourful markets and Vide Greniers in the villages throughout the summer months. Fontenay Le Comte has a great Saturday market - 15 minutes away.

Introducing

John & Annie Lupton

John and Annie have lived in France since 2000. They bought their house in Provence and rented it with Sawday's, then sold it before the Covid pandemic struck and are loving semi-retirement in a new region, closer to their children and grandchildren who live in the UK. They are relaxed, easy-going owners.
