The Experience

The family manor, a listed building, goes back to 1492: note the coat of arms over the door. Both castle and hotel are run generously, and singlehandedly, by charming Laurent, who was born here, and his Romanian wife Orelia. Outside is one of the oldest dovecotes in France, a peaceful pool and a hot tub, a tiny sauna, table tennis and bikes; the grounds are open and safe, the meadows stretch to the horizon.

Inside, a dignified room for candlelit feasts, a sitting room with billiards and a tapestry or two, a priest’s hole for hiding, should you need one, and a massive stone staircase. This sweeps you up to five characterful suites, historic, traditional, their long windows overlooking the park, their armoires polished to perfection, their chintz bright, their fireplaces lit when it’s chilly.

Dinners can be ordered from the local caterer and eaten in the dining room or the garden on balmy evenings, but it’s a short hop to restaurants.

Reviews

This is a great stopover on the Atlantic coast, between Bordeaux and the Channel ferry [ports. the bedrooms are lovely, the grounds are huge and there is a wonderful pool and jacuzzi to relax in after a tiring day travelling. It is definitely worth staying a couple of days in order to visit the Puy du Fou park, featuring events from French history, which includes a colosseum.

Nicky, Sawday's Inspector

An excellent place to stay, but Sawday's website is seriously misleading in describing it as a Hotel, which it is not and does not pretend to be. It is a most welcoming Chambre d'Hotes with very good facilities and the owners are prepared to provide dinner from time to time. There are pleasant walks nearby and many sights to see in the vicinity. The nearest town is Chantonnay, which like much of France outside the high season seems prone to a lot of "fermeture exceptionelle". Nevertheless we greatly enjoyed our stay and appreciated the hospitality we received at the Manoir.

Location

The neighbourhood

The entrance is down a long driveway, the feeling is sleepy and bucolic, walks and cycles will be wonderful. The nearest town is Chantonnay, an eight-minute drive, for restaurants and shops. The extraordinary theme park, Le Puy de Fou, deserves two full days to do it justice, including the evening show featuring thousands of actors and animals. The large and lovely beaches of the Vendee are 1 hour away.
