The Experience
Come for delicious food: vegetables from the garden, organic, seasonal local produce and as much that is foraged as possible. Breakfast is a buffet, served in the dining room or outside on the terrace: home baked bread, homemade jams, fresh fruit salad, pastries and yogurts, or something cooked like frittata or an omelette. Table d’hôte menus are planned in advance but will usually include soup, pâté, a meat dish, cheese, then pudding.
You sleep in comfortable, traditional bedrooms, one in the attic, with fresh flowers, antique furniture and pretty windows. There’s a real fire in the dining room for chilly days, and a couple of comfy chairs. Plan your day here before heading out. You’re in the town square of Saint-Pierre-du-Lorouër, quiet and residential and surrounded by farmland, so walks are lovely.
Return to cool off in the little wooden plunge pool or enjoy a spot of yoga with Sarah, a qualified teacher.

This is a very special place - a charming, low-key B&B. A fine old house, owned and run by enthusiastic Scottish owners with humour. Their great love for their adopted home and the nature surrounding is infectious. I cannot wait to visit them and taste their foraged and homegrown cooking!

What a find! We stayed overnight on our way south and again on our return. This B&B is an absolute gem. Sarah and Lewis are fantastic hosts - very friendly and there’s a great atmosphere. We were lucky enough to be able to sit in the courtyard for drinks and canapés (best mushroom on toast you’ll ever have!) before having a great meal in the dining room. Well worth the money they charge. Beds were very comfortable. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated with en-suite showers. Breakfast was a veritable feast. We hope to return again as a stopover next time we are driving down to our holiday.

We stayed overnight at Le Chaton Rouge on our way through France. Sarah is a brilliant host and we thoroughly enjoyed every single aspect of our brief stay - our room, the traditional and beautiful house, the welcome, the food - all wonderful and we would highly recommend this Bed and Breakfast.

This small establishment is a real gem! clean, comfortable, spacious rooms with tea/coffee making facilities and quiet. Sarah is a fantastic host and provided us with a warm welcome; she prepared a really excellent evening meal, having already established any likes/dislikes. Most of the produce was locally sourced and had wonderful flavours. The breakfast was equally delicious, with homemade bread etc. It definitely rates as the best of our hotel/B&B choices.

Professionally run and charming small Hotel in a small village south of Le Mans. Superb welcome and excellent freshly-prepared breakfast 'en- terrasse' or in the old French barn - where evening 4-5 course meals (plus wine) are also served by arrangement with the owner, Sarah. Lovely old furniture in the 5 bedrooms but with modern facilities and en-suite bathrooms. Friends and I stayed in 2016 and also got some nice tips on visiting local chateaux and vineyards plus a day out to Tours is a must. We liked it and definitely staying again. Top Banana !

We stayed overnight to break our journey to Bordeaux and were so glad to discover Le Chaton Rouge! A very tastefully restored house - charming room with beautiful French bed and sweet-smelling linen. We couldn't have wished for a warmer welcome from out hostess and enjoyed meeting friends and family. Lovely rural setting with lively local bar and excellent nearby restaurant. Delicious and generous feast for breakfast. Highly recommended.

We stopped at Le Chaton Rouge for one night on route back to Calais. Sarah was welcoming and warm from the minute we arrived, and she is a fantastic cook! The property has been renovated beautifully and we had a very comfortable and enjoyable night. I would stay there again next time I am driving down France/in the that direction.

This is by far the best B&B we've stayed in, in France. Sarah welcomes you with a huge glass of wine, followed by delicious tea for the children and even more delicious dinner for adults in her pretty courtyard. It is a magical place, full of character, beautiful interiors, lovely bathroom and very comfy beds. Amazing breakfasts too! A very very special pace, we will be back for sure! Charlotte Colville

My husband and I stayed at Le Chaton Rouge in June while on a road trip from Paris to the south of France. Sarah made us feel so welcome with complimentary wine in her beautiful backyard. She then recommended a restaurant in a local town and called ahead to make reservations for us. Our room was very charming and eclectic. The bathroom was fully modernized with a claw foot tub. Our breakfast was amazing with homemade jam and other wonderful things to savour. Sarah is a wonderful host and so fun to talk with. I would definitely return to this B&B just to see Sarah again!!

An excellent B & B; lovely house with great character and rooms. Sarah was very welcoming and friendly and we enjoyed dinner in the courtyard at the back of the house where we met the 'le chaton rouge'. It is about 4 to 5 hours south from Calais and an ideal place to stop on the way to the Loire or further south.

This was our first B & B on our visit to France. We stayed at three B & B's over five days and this was the very best. It is a delightful house with a very artistic mix of old and new. Sarah was the perfect host and provided a great selection of food for breakfast and a wonderful dinner in the outdoor dining room. In fact the best meals we had in France. Wished we could have stayed longer. We would highly recommend this B & B for a short or longer stay.

Sarah is a wonderful friendly host in her beautifully restored village house. Along with George the cat, there are big breakfasts and comfortable beds provided, even a nice little secluded garden to sit and have a gin and tonic should the mood take you. Very much enjoyed our stay there and would definitely go back in future.

What a lovely place to stay. Sarah could not have been more accommodating to our family (including our 2 little ones). We enjoyed a lovely meal in the outside dining room after the children had eaten their favourite meal and gone to bed (we could keep an ear out from the garden). A lovely sleep and a super breakfast. Very relaxing Thank you!

Location
The neighbourhood
The Forêt de Bercé is a short stroll away with many trails for walking, cycling or riding. There are lots of pretty villages and towns to explore along the river Loir, with restaurants serving regional food, markets and wine tastings. Wild swim in the lake at Varennes, which also has a sandy beach. If you want to go fishing the owners can help with rods, permits, a guide and also a picnic.
Local points of interest from Sarah Carlisle & Lewis Lyle
- A few km's to the south of us are the lovely villages and towns situated along the banks of the River Loir; La Chartre-sur-Loir for example. Wine tasting, brocantes and vide-greniers most weekends (or the keen Treasure Hunters )
- Only 12km away are the lakes at Marcon, with a sand beach, slide & lifeguard, great swimming & water sports, plus a small park for the kids. Ideal for families with young kids. The Bugatti circuit is close by in Le Mans, to drive on the Mulsanne straight!
- The forest of Bercé is an ideal place for walking, horse-riding, cycling and mountain biking (315 km of waymarked itineraries). A dappled network of trails...Mushroom picking tours arranged in season, that combines a day foraging and a day cooking!
- It's well worth visiting the bio wine producers of the Maison Rouge, a favourite amongst many local wine producers - although there are lots to recommend - Croisard, (house special) Freseneau & Gigou..Wine & Cheese tours can be arranged.
- The Loir and surrounding tributaries offer beautiful fishing & kayaking locations, we can tailor packages and an experienced guide. including permits, rods & equipment and the perfect picnic ....as well as hopefully BBQing the catch of the day.
- There is the local market on a Wednesday - that sell the most amazing unpasturised organic goats cheese, i use organic & local products whenever possible for Table d'hôtes ( Le Chaton Rouge is a now fully liscenced restaurant establishment)

Introducing
Sarah Carlisle & Lewis Lyle
Sarah (an interior designer) and Lewis (a chef, fisherman and hunter) are passionate foodies and foragers. They're keen to organise foraging trips for guests and then to demonstrate how to turn what you find into part of a nutritious meal. They called the B&B after a cat they once had with the same name, they now have a new cat called Luna.
A lovely stay en route from Dordogne back to UK. The b&b is very comfortable with a lovely garden and very comfy bed, but it is the friendly and hospitable hosts, Sarah and Lewis who really make it. We also booked dinner and had a fantastic meal cooked by Lewis. Breakfast was excellent too.
