The Experience

Turning into the long drive your first glimpse of La Ruche, in the peaceful isolation of its pretty park will gladden weary travellers. You’re treated to restored 18th-century elegance along with luxurious beds and bathrooms, quirky vintage finds (Tim’s a keen ‘up-cycler’….) and drawing rooms to repair to.

Rebecca loves to cook so do dine in – on the best local and seasonal food; French-inspired with English twists; preceded by a friendly cocktail. Breakfasts are generous too with great pastries and preserves.

Arrange a special celebration here, or a Le Mans group visit and every detail will be seen to. Take the path to the Sarthe river or hop in the car to visit local villages and châteaux. Swim in the lake at Sille-le-Guillaume; head for the Alpes Mancelles for kayaking, hiking, biking.

Reviews

It was a rare privilege to stay somewhere as magical as Tim and Rebecca's chateau. I was there on a creative retreat with a bunch of wonderful wedding florists and we had 3 fantastic days of incredible food, wine and hospitality. I was lucky enough to stay in the Garden room - exquisitely restored with every comfort and luxury thought of. I particularly loved the bathroom with the roll top bath complete with bath caddy tray so you had somewhere to pop your glass of Cremant whilst soaking in the tub. Can't wait to return.

The house has been beautifully restored and decorated. The attention to detail is superb and the home grown fresh flowers everywhere are absolutely lovely. We are a family of five and the Meadow Suite accommodated us very well. We all had the gorgeous evening meals offered - the children had a yummy early meal and we adults had a delicious four course meal later. We would highly recommend a stay at Chateau de la Ruche.

Fantastic - we loved our short stay at Chateau de la Ruche. Tim and Rebecca are great hosts with the just right balance of welcoming you and being incredibly helpful, but also allowing you time and space to relax and enjoy their beautiful home. Sadly we were just there for an overnight stop but next time we'll definitely stay longer. Elderflower G&Ts in the garden and a delicious dinner in the salon were a highlight.

Helen, Ipswich

Attention to detail and the evidence of their enthusiasm and love for the Chateau was everywhere we looked. Just a shame we only had one night as a stopover, hope to return soon to sample the dinnertime menu's and soak up some of the local area in more detail. Thanks Rebecca and Tim for a restoring such a beautiful Chateau and making a special place to stay.

I really loved this beautiful place. It has a sleepy warm feel to it. The owners have just special attitude and are really making an effort. I am certain they will build up a very faithful return clientele!

Location

The neighbourhood

In gentle countryside near the A28, so a great place to break a longer journey. Visit the medieval town of Beaumont-sur-Sarthe, with its good eateries, 6k away; and the dungeon in Ballon, 5k. Explore the Alpes Mancelles; take the path that runs by the woods and walk to the River Sarthe (1-2hrs). It’s a 30-minute drive to Le Mans, to Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei, one of France’s loveliest villages, and to Sille-le-Guillaume with its wild swimming lake.

Local points of interest from Rebecca & Tim Jones

  • The bustling market in Place des Jacobins by the Cathedral in Le Mans on Wednesday and Sunday mornings and all day on Friday is a must for food lovers. Sit and watch the world go by at one of the cafes on the square too.
  • Stroll through the ancient streets of the Plantagenet cité of Old Town Le Mans - up the steps beside the cathedral. Perfect for history lovers, especially if the Tudors are your thing. Wear flat shoes because cobblestones abound.
  • Through July and August at dusk Old Town Le Mans is lit up by a magnificent light show - Nuits des chimères. Perfect for a balmy evening stroll post supper.
  • Car lovers can lose a day exploring the Le Mans 24hr Museum at the world-famous racetrack. Bring your fancy car with you (we have lots of secure off-street parking) and treat yourself to a track day. Or ask us about our bespoke Le Mans race weekends.
  • Many of the Loire Valley châteaux, as well as the beautiful towns and vineyards of Saumur, Tours and Angers are just an hour from our Petit Château - the perfect day trip for wine lovers and Château hunters.
  • Searching for antiques and bargains? Ask us about our favourite brocante haunts, we're happy to share our secrets.

Introducing

Rebecca & Tim Jones

Rebecca and Tim’s love of old houses and their appetite for a new project led them to swap busy lives – working in journalism and engineering in Lincolnshire – for busy lives in the Pays de la Loire. Tim’s mother introduced them to the region, they fell for the charms of La Ruche, moved in with their 2 small children in 2017 and have since been fulfilling their promise to the previous owners to breathe new life into their much-loved petit château and gite.
