The Experience

Climb a flight of stairs to reach the living spaces of this converted 19th-century farmhouse, which includes an open-plan living and dining room and bedrooms with luxurious king-sized beds.

Find books and games for rainy days, a superbly equipped kitchen fit for a chef and a basket on arrival of local and homemade treats; cook up a feast with produce from the potager. There’s a private patio for sunny days, and you’re welcome to use the swimming pool, pool house and entertainment area too.

The château is surrounded by gardens (re-designed by landscape gardener Paul Bangay), 25 acres of parkland with long vistas and mature woodland and beyond it, picturesque countryside. Solesmes Abbey was built in 1010 and is the home of the Gregorian Chant; the fortified town of Sainte-Suzanne is one of the oldest and loveliest medieval villages in the region (both 30 minutes’ drive). This is a great base to explore the delights of Brittany, Normandy and the Loire Valley.

Reviews

We had a hugely magical and memorable stay at the Guesthouse. On arrival, the views of the Chateau are truly breathtaking and the rest of the grounds are equally enticing - we (incl. our 3 young girls) thoroughly enjoyed exploring the various spaces. The guesthouse is spacious, beautifully decorated and equipped with everything you need (a home away from home), including a thoughtfully well-stocked fridge. The garden is exceptional, with inspiring views and access to fresh produce. The owner is remarkable and kind and we cannot wait to return to this captivating and creative dreamworld!

Jean-Marc, London

I was wowed by my first glimpse of the property when I tuned down the drive and saw the château at the end of the magnificent long vista through the woods. The garden-loving owner has created a cosy and convivial apartment in the farmhouse, surrounded by expansive parks and gardens of the château.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are pretty towns and villages nearby worth visiting for their weekly markets, shops and architecture. The nearest, Meslay-du-Maine, a nine-minute drive, has great bakeries, restaurants and a market on Fridays. Laval (20 minutes) also has a 12th-century château, half-timbered houses, cheese shops and interesting art museums.

Local points of interest from Suzie Jackson

  • Wake up to the sounds of birds or while away the hours wandering the chateau grounds and beautiful walled garden. Dinner in the greenhouse perhaps??
  • If the owners are in residence you might get a tour of the chateau itself and share an aperitif on the terrace.
  • Take a pre-lunch stroll alongside the Mayenne and then enjoy a lazy lunch at the Loch restaurant.
  • Stock up on produce at the Saturday morning market in Laval. Don't forget the roast chicken and potatoes from the rotisserie man.
  • Sundays are definitely meant for brocanting and we're happy to give you the inside scoop on the best places to score a bargain or treasure to take home.
  • Enjoy organic produce from the chateau potager and orchard. Cooking classes can be arranged on request.

Introducing

Suzie Jackson

Australian Suzie fulfilled her dream of owning her own fairy-tale château in 2014, and since becoming the fourth owner of the estate, has poured masses of love and money into its restoration. She lives in the château but if she's not around there is always another friendly face onsite during your stay if you need anything. You may be invited for a tour and an evening apéritif too, depending on the length of your stay.
