The Experience

The village was once a silk manufacturing centre and in the 1930s was a magnet for artists when the cubist André Lhote set up his workshop and painting school here. The ancient house is full of character and charm with nooks and crannies, stone staircases leading hither and thither, unexpected features and paintings by Victoria Poklewski-Koziell, Adam Norton and others.

The kitchen is neither modern or large but it has all you need and a sublime view from the window – handy for passing out food to the terrace. You’ll spend most of your time here, gazing at the Ardèche mountains surrounded by lemon trees in pots and a big sycamore for shade. Bedrooms and bathrooms are spread over three floors – all face away from the street and three have that view.

Amble down to many restaurants or light the wood-fired barbecue and magic up something delicious – evenings here will be peaceful, cooling off in the unheated pool, lying on a sunbed watching the light fade.

Reviews

A fascinating house with lots to interest you, from the many original paintings on the walls to the gorgeous views. Comfortable bedrooms and sitting room all with interesting nooks and crannies. A lovely sunny terrace and pool. The house opens straight onto the medieval streets of one of France's Plus Beaux Villages, waiting to be explored with endless artists' workshops. Definitely worth a stay.

Location

The neighbourhood

With its tiny cobbled streets running down a steep hill, the village is a charming medieval maze. There are plenty of restaurants, the boulangerie which also sells a few groceries, a small market on a Saturday selling cheese and meat (you'll find a bigger one on a Tuesday in Livron-sur-Drôme), a pizzeria and a crêperie. Drive seven mins to a farm shop, A Travers Champs, for local food and beer.

Local points of interest from The Owners

  • Mirmande is one of the most romantic villages imaginable - set upon medieval ramparts, nestled into a hill, with views across orchards and open meadows. Walk out the front door and explore a maze of pretty, Romanesque alleyways.
  • There are eight restaurants and cafés within walking distance, including Michelin-listed La Capitelle (in Mirmande), and La Fontaine and La Treille Muscat (in Cliousclat). La Conserverie and Les Aubergistes in nearby Marsanne are also recommended.
  • The nearby markets are a highlight: local specialities include: nougat, olives, olive oil, truffles, pintadeau (guinea-fowl), ravioli, apricots, peaches, walnuts and of course goat’s cheese and Côte du Rhône wine.
  • The nearby Drôme region has a wonderful variety of landscapes - fields of lavender, vines, oak forests and the majestic peaks of the Vercors Regional Nature Park. It also has many medieval hilltop villages and Romanesque churches and chapels.
  • The Ardèche, is another very scenic ‘département’ nearby. Plenty of opportunities for the outward bound, such as canoeing, kayaking, rock-climbing, paragliding and hiking. The Ardèche Gorge is known as the ‘European Grand Canyon’.
  • There is a national forest behind Mirmande that you can walk into directly from the house. Lengths of walks to suit everyone, from 30 minutes to 3 hours! It's very peaceful and you rarely see another soul.
