The Experience

Slip through narrow streets to a beautiful house in exquisite gardens. The rich silk merchants of Avignon once lived here and your worldly hosts Olivier and Laurence usher you in with a coffee or glass of wine. Take it to a comfy sofa, or one of the garden’s secret places, with only birdsong and the whisper of scant breezes in the trees to break the silence.

There’s a Moroccan feel here, hidden behind high, cool walls with a long, inviting swimming pool for cooling off. Return to the five south-facing bedrooms – each quiet, private, quirky, with cossetting beds and bathrooms. Breakfasts of local organic juice, pastries, and various jams and honeys is served to you on the gravel terrace or in the kitchen but feel welcome to make yourself a snack or drink if the mood strikes.

Avignon and wider Provence are at your feet. Walk to the famous Pont, Palais des Papes and the waterwheels of rue des Teinturiers, graze the covered food market on place Pie. Make trips to Uzès, Arles, Nîmes; climb Mont Ventoux, wander lavender fields or the hills of the Luberon and Alpilles.

Reviews

Absolutely perfect. The house, our room and garden with peaceful little pool are gorgeous. Great location, near to all you’d want to see in this charming city. Olivier and Laurence are extremely welcoming and helpful. After four nights there, we were really sad to leave. A la prochaine fois!

Les Jardines de Baracane met with all our expectations. Olivier and Laurence were perfect hosts. They made us feel very welcome and shared a great deal of useful local information. The setting was perfect, quiet, yet within a few minutes of everything you should want to see in this wonderful city. I would not hesitate to recommend. Thank you!

This is one of the nicest places we have stayed. It is in the heart of the walled city of Avignon, close to many great restaurants and bars with a lovely quiet garden to enjoy one of the complimentary drinks after a day's sightseeing. Olivier and Laurence were perfect hosts sharing their knowledge of the local area. The room was clean, comfortable and peaceful. We would definitely stay again.

Les Jardins de Baracane is one of the nicest places we have stayed. It is tucked away in a quiet street in Avignon but within easy walking distance of many lovely restaurants and bars. Olivier & Laurence were perfect hosts. Olivier was very welcoming and gave us lots of information on the local area. The room was very comfortable and the gardens were a quiet place to relax with complimentary drinks after a day exploring the area. We would definitely recommend this to friends and family.

Les Jardins de Baracane is absolutely one of the best places I've stayed, in many years of traveling. A great location within the walls of Avignon; lovely room; gorgeous gardens; and truly charming, helpful hosts in Olivier and Laurence. Very highly recommended.

I stayed here during summer - I loved the old house and the garden is a dream. The few minutes walk to the heart of Avignon a great bonus. Really delightful hosts, charming and informative, but never intrusive.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is intramuros – tucked within the storied walls of Papal Avignon, down a fairly unremarkable Provençal lane and opening off an ancient door set within high walls. There are private properties either side, but you’d never know it. The centre is within walking distance so fill up on rosé and pot-au-feu, steak and fried potatoes, desserts with local oregano, at the many restaurants that throng the labyrinthine streets. Most things are a two to five-minute walk: banks, shops, cafes, museums. Place des Corps-Saints, with its carefree, village-like feel, is just 200 metres away.

Local points of interest from Olivier & Laurence

  • We are living in an historic 17th century building which used to be the house of the Companions of Jesus. It has been recently restored and is now a B&B with 5 independent bedrooms, each with its bathroom.
  • Our house is located in the heart of the medieval city of Avignon, walking distance from the Pope's Palace and the famous old Pont d'Avignon.
  • Although in the heart of the city, we have a lovely garden and a swimming pool hidden at the back of the garden.
  • The Jardins de Baracane are often described as an oasis in the city. Indeed we are located in a narrow street, not accessible by car, meaning absolutely no noise once at home.
  • Avignon is the heart of Provence, ideally located to explore other cities such as Arles, Nîmes or Aix en Provence, by car, by train or with a guided tour.
  • If you prefer small typical villages, you can in less than an hour go to the Luberon to visit Gordes, Lacoste, Bonnieux or Roussillon or Les Alpilles to visit, Saint Rémy de Provence or Les Baux de Provence. You can also easily go to wild Camargue.

Introducing

Olivier & Laurence

A fragrant working life as a herb and spice buyer took Olivier around the world, but he and wife Laurence longed to put down roots in a beautiful place. Be welcomed as if among friends at their Avignon home, where they live in a separate, but adjoining, part of the house, with Minette the cat. Laurence works as an estate agent during the day, while Olivier is available for every need – advice, a hairdresser, calling a taxi – and speaks fluent English.
