The Experience
You couldn’t be better placed for ambling around historic Avignon than at this B&B within the city’s old walls. The latest incarnation of a building that has in its lifetime been part of a monastery, a barracks and a factory, there are now five light, spacious en-suite rooms in the main house and an annexe converted into a cosy apartment for four. Dutch hosts welcome you with a glass of wine.
Start the day in the newly-glazed breakfast room with freshly-baked pastries, hams, lots of different cheeses, eggs and always homemade jam and marmalade. Though the Palais des Papes and Pont d’Avignon are only a short stroll, it’s blissfully calm. Cool off in the sparkling pool (it’s heated out of season too) after a long day or meandering around town or find a quiet spot in the garden simply to read a book or doze.
If you take the apartment you’ll have a nifty kitchen of your own, so head to the market then come back and cook.

We had a lovely stay. The room and bathroom were lovely and comfortable with good aircon. The garden and pool area are delightful and the pool was perfect for a dip. The hosts were lovely, a perfect mix of helpful and discreet. The breakfast was delicious. Avignon's sights and restaurants are 5-15 mins walk away. Thoroughly recommend.

We arrived for our first visit to Avignon and found L'Observance a short walk from the rail station. We were greeted with a welcome drink by wonderful hosts . The setting is wonderful , a quiet historic backwater yet close to the town. We were shown to a modern and well equipped room where we stayed for 3 days in a perfect calm. Breakfast each morning was a lovely experience , croissants ,fruit meats and cheeses. Our hosts could not have been more helpful and the whole visit was made the better for finding such a peaceful haven. We plan to return.

Location
The neighbourhood
Avignon is at your feet for as many restaurants, shops, cafés and bars you can manage to visit. This was the capital of Christendom in the Middle Ages, now having an exceptional cultural history, much of which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's also famous for its theatre festival, founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar and bringing world class contemporary theatre in the summer months.
Local points of interest from Jacqueline & Jeroen Tutein Nolthenius
- The Pope's Palace is at a 15 minutes walk from l'Observance. Builded in the 14th century, it only served as the residence for 7 different Popes for appr. 100 years.
- "Sur le pont d'Avignon on y danse on y danse..." the first line of a famous children's song in France and abroad. The "Pont Benezet", the remains of the connection between the both sides of the Rhone river.
- The famous Pont du Gard (Roman Aquaduct) part of the overr 50 km long watersupply system of Nimes at only 30 min by car (or bus).
- Enjoy art in a different way in the old limestonecave "Carrière Luninaire" in Les Baux de Provence.
- The Van Gogh foundation in Arles is 20 min away by car or train.

Introducing
Jacqueline & Jeroen Tutein Nolthenius
Jacqueline and Jeroen (who used to work as a transport manager for an international chemical company) are welcoming and chatty. They used to have a B&B in Normandy so they are old hands at looking after guests. They settled here in 2014.
A sanctuary of calm with a lovely cool pool and roof terrace right in the middle of Avignon. Very chic, comfortable and clean rooms with a warm welcome from the hosts.
