The Experience

This lovingly-restored house dates from the 9th century and is set in the foothills of Mont-Ventoux Biosphere Reserve. The charming house manager will greet you and the butler will help with your luggage.

Breakfast by the rose terrace overlooking the pool and enjoy home-grown cherries, apricots, almonds and honey from Xavier’s bees; come evening dine in the medieval garden watching the sunset or on the terraced patio. Sample award-winning wines, swim in the heated pool, play tennis or take a cooking class (when the chef is available); you can also watch a film in the home cinema – guests can even enjoy a free wine tasting.

The nearby hilltop town of Crestet has narrow, cobbled streets, a medieval castle, an art museum, and a good, authentic Provencal restaurant – Xavier recommends L’Epicurien or La Loupiote pizzeria. Carpentras, a 45-minute drive away, has a famous market on Fridays with hundreds of stalls; historic Avignon is an hour away.

We think you'll love

  • The breakfasts, served under a rose-covered arbour in summer – bread and pastries from the brilliant local baker, local cheeses and charcuterie, the sweetest melons
  • The sheer isolation of the setting, like a Provençal Shangri-La, lost in the hills
  • Being so incredibly well looked after by the charming staff

Reviews

This is a very special B&B – in a wine estate alone in a hidden valley in the middle of the Luberon. Once the glassworks for the popes in Avignon, the property is a luxury B&B with beautiful bedrooms, immaculate service, incredible views and lots of ambiance.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is set within 135 hectares of countryside with forest, hills, vineyards and miles of private trails; you can climb up the valley to Vaison-la-Romaine, a medieval town with Roman ruins and a cathedral. Hikers and rock climbers can head to the Dentelles de Montmirail cliff range, 20 minutes' walk away, or hire bikes – ask about guided cycling tours and electric mountain bike tours.

Local points of interest from Xavier & Nicole

  • Positive Luxury Butterfly Mark sustainability certification.
  • Lou Canesteou, a fine cheese dairy located in Vaison la Romaine since 1990, has been selecting its producers by favouring quality over quantity with a strong local accent, which earned the title of "Meilleur Ouvrier de France" to Mrs. Josiane Deal in 2004.
  • The Roman Theatre of Orange is one of the most beautiful legacies of imperial Rome. An outstanding testimony to Antiquity inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
  • La Cuisine Provencale is an authentic French kitchen in the historic center of Saint Remy de Provence, where we can explore & create through traditional French regional recipes and enjoy beautiful meals.
  • Gourmet Cycling Travel provide tours of Provence with a multiple-day cycling trip that uses La Verrière as a base for refuelling, relaxation, wine tasting, and a dip in the pool.

Introducing

Xavier & Nicole

Xavier and Nicole regularly stay on the estate. They bought the property in a state of complete ruin and spent over a decade restoring it and started making their award-winning Chêne Bleu wine after they discovered the vineyard. They both share a deep appreciation of nature, culture, wine and gastronomy.
